What Customers Ask About the Waiter's Corkscrew Gift Set

The set includes a wood-finish waiter's corkscrew with integrated foil cutter and two-step lever system, plus a matching cork stopper with 3 rings for different bottle sizes. Both pieces coordinate in design and come presented in gift packaging, making this ready for gifting without additional wrapping.

A waiter's corkscrew (also called sommelier knife) is compact, professional-style with a folding design. It includes a built-in foil cutter and lever arm that braces against the bottle lip, providing mechanical advantage for easy cork removal. The two-step system - using two notches on the lever - allows extraction with minimal effort. It's the style professionals use.

The lever arm has two notches at different positions. First, screw the spiral into the cork, hook the first notch on the bottle lip, and lift the handle to horizontal - this pulls the cork partway out. Then reposition to the second notch (closer to the handle) and lift again to fully extract the cork. This two-stage action requires less force than single-stage corkscrews.

The foil cutter is a small serrated blade integrated into the corkscrew body (usually folds out like the other components). Use it to score and remove the foil capsule before inserting the corkscrew. Some users prefer a dedicated foil cutter for cleaner cuts, but the integrated blade is convenient for having everything in one tool.

The cork stopper has three graduated rings (different diameters) that allow it to fit various bottle neck sizes. This universal design works with standard wine bottles, champagne bottles, and other wine-style bottles with different internal neck diameters. Press the stopper into the bottle opening until it seals - the appropriate ring will create the seal.

Whilst the stopper will physically fit sparkling wine bottles, it's not designed to contain pressure from carbonation. For sparkling wines and champagne, use a purpose-designed sparkling wine stopper with a clamp mechanism that secures under the bottle lip. The cork stopper is best for still wines.

Use & Care Instructions

Before first use: Remove all labels and packaging. Wipe both the corkscrew and stopper with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly.

Using the waiter's corkscrew:

Step 1 - Remove foil: Unfold the small serrated blade (foil cutter). Score the foil capsule around the bottle neck just below the lip. Remove and discard the foil cap. Fold the foil cutter back.

Step 2 - Position the corkscrew: Hold the bottle firmly on a solid, level surface. Unfold the spiral (worm) and lever arm into a "T" shape. The corkscrew should be in line with the lever arm. Centre the tip of the spiral on the cork. Be careful - the spiral tip is sharp.

Step 3 - Insert the spiral: Apply slight downward pressure and begin screwing the spiral into the cork using steady, controlled rotation. Continue until approximately half a turn of the spiral remains visible above the cork. Screwing too far can push cork fragments into the wine.

Step 4 - First lift: Position the first notch (furthest from the handle) of the lever arm on the bottle lip. Keep the lever braced against the glass whilst lifting the handle upward to horizontal position. This pulls the cork partway out. The leverage makes this require minimal force.

Step 5 - Second lift: Reposition to the second notch (closer to the handle) on the bottle lip. Lift the handle again to fully extract the cork. Remove the cork from the spiral by twisting or pulling it off.

Using the cork stopper: After opening your wine, insert the cork stopper into the bottle opening. Push down firmly - the appropriate ring (of the three graduated sizes) will create a seal based on your bottle's internal neck diameter. The stopper preserves wine by reducing air exposure. Store opened wine in the refrigerator with the stopper in place. The stopper is suitable for still wines only, not sparkling wines under pressure.

Cleaning: Take care when cleaning - the spiral tip and foil cutter blade are sharp. Wipe the corkscrew with a damp cloth or wash in warm, soapy water. Pay attention to removing any wine residue from the spiral grooves. Dry thoroughly after washing - water left on the wood finish or metal can cause damage or staining. The cork stopper can be washed in warm, soapy water and dried thoroughly. Don't soak either piece or put in the dishwasher, as this can damage the wood finish.

Storage: Fold the corkscrew closed for compact storage. Store both pieces in a dry place. Ensure they're completely dry before storing to prevent moisture damage to the wood finish. The compact folded size makes drawer storage practical, or display them with other wine accessories.

Safety: The spiral tip and foil cutter blade are sharp by design. Handle with care when opening the corkscrew and during cleaning. Keep the corkscrew folded when not in use. Ensure the corkscrew is seated squarely on the bottle neck before use to prevent slipping.

Le Creuset's 10 year guarantee reflects their confidence in build quality. Quality corkscrews with proper construction should last decades. The guarantee covers manufacturing defects - if the spiral breaks, lever mechanism fails, or components separate due to defects in materials or workmanship, Le Creuset will replace it. Normal wear isn't covered.

Wipe with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly after use. Don't soak in water or put in the dishwasher - prolonged water exposure can damage wood finishes. The finish is designed for durability, but proper care maintains its appearance. Store in a dry place. Avoid leaving wine residue on the wood-finish areas.

Yes, waiter's corkscrews work with natural cork, synthetic cork, and agglomerate cork. The spiral (also called worm or helix) penetrates all cork types effectively. Synthetic corks may require slightly more turning force initially but extract the same way. The two-step lever system provides ample mechanical advantage for any cork type.

If a cork breaks, reinsert the spiral at an angle into the remaining cork portion and extract carefully. Old, dry, or low-quality corks are most prone to breaking. The two-step lever system helps prevent breakage by distributing extraction force. For very old wines with fragile corks, consider using a two-prong cork puller (Ah-So) instead.

The cork stopper reduces air exposure but doesn't create a vacuum seal or remove oxygen already in the bottle. Expect 2-3 days for white wines and 3-5 days for reds when refrigerated with the stopper. For longer preservation, consider purpose-designed vacuum wine preservation systems. The stopper is best for short-term storage between servings.
