A Riedel Testing? Silverwood bakeware, Le Creuset Kettles offer

I had a meeting on Wednesday this week with Martin Turner our Riedel account manager, he who I've referred to in the past as, "our walking talking encyclopaedia of food and wine", and he kindly brought with him some of their new Wine Wings range for me to try out, (of which more next week) and, incidentally, asked me if I'd thought any more about a Riedel wine tasting, or I suppose to be more precise, a Riedel wine glass "Testing". These testing's are an extraordinary experience for many, because most people coming to one of these are coming with a considerable degree of doubt and scepticism. Typically they don't expect to be shown (to taste actually) so convincingly that the shape and size of the bowl does actually make a significant difference to the flavour of their favourite wine, and are even more surprised to find themselves moved to spend their hard earned cash on them...

So I thought I'd canvas your opinion on this idea, and ask you, when you've finished reading, if you'd pop a "yes, interested" or "no not interested" in the comments section at the bottom of the email to help give me an idea of what level of interest there might currently be in holding a tasting.

Silverwood in Reigate this week . Cobham next
Now, for Reigate, some very exciting news. I was on the phone to David Jacks, who three years ago bought Silverwood's Bakeware off the Silverwood family, after Simon Silverwood died. You may recall, if you've been reading my missives for some time, that I wrote a piece about him (Simon) as both a supplier and a friend just after he died. Well David was "Chosen" by Simon, and chosen well , and I say that partly because he has also become a friend and that, in part, is because of what Simon, David and I have in common. Which is a similar set of values, by which we run our lives and partly because Silverwood's make the best bakeware on the market to today, bar none. It is lightening fast, it will bake your flans without soggy bottoms, your bread with a good crunchy crust, your cake beautifully and evenly done and the bakeware (as opposed to roasting dishes* ) are a doddle to wash up, which is perhaps a good thing, as Silverwood doesn't like dishwashers. In short a brilliant product that, unlike non-stick coatings, effectively lasts for ever (please don't this too literally. Think 20 to 50 years and you won't be disappointed!).

But we have been out of stock of much of the range for many many months and this is for a variety of reasons. They are partly Covid related, partly supply problems and partly just things settling down after David taking over the reins, so indeed, until Thursday, I had failed completely to get my hands on so much as a bread pan . Thursday, however all this changed as "The Best Bakeware in the World" turned up in Reigate in force, Jacky and Paul T wore it beautifully I thought,( picture courtesy of Vicki).

And next week we are expecting a similar delivery in Cobham as well. Nothing like scarcity to make the heart grow even fonder, or just pathetically grateful, and as you can see on Paul and Jacky's face, very happy!

Just like being reunited with an old friend.

The pricing has risen this year by about 5 or 6%,from memory, but we haven't yet implemented this, and if you buy two or more pieces this weekend we will take 10% off your bill.

* these can be more challenging to clean especially if they've been used at very high temperature.

Le Creuset Kettle Offer.
For reasons that I'm a little unsure about, Le Creuset Kettles have never been much on my radar. Is it because we've never done that well with them, is it because that are made from steel, and not the cast iron that I was expecting all those years ago when they first introduced them? I don't know, but they do sell a lot of them, so Vicky tells me, and at present we have 25% off them.

Therefore a Cone shaped kettle at £85 comes down to about £64 and the traditional shaped one at £99 will be approximately £75. So if you like the idea of a stove top kettle then you have a choice of colours and they are about £20 ish pounds off. Not a bargain but good value, good quality and very traditional. They work on Gas, Aga and Electric solid plate, Ceramic hobs and, of course, Induction. They are also available in polished stainless steel at approximately a 25% premium.
