This Riedel Superleggero Champagne Wine Glass is a masterpiece of state-of-the-art technology and is a machine-made version of the old handmade Superleggero. The shape allows the wide range of aromatics to unfold.
Unlike a flute, the egg-shaped design allows the complex layers to grow and intensify, and the larger rim diameter enables them to be released in a way which is not achieved with a narrow glass.
The Riedel Superleggero Champagne Wine Glass also includes a 'sparkling point' to aid the formation of the Champagne bubbles.
The motivation to replace the original lies in the perfection of a machine-made glass compared to handmade. As Riedel glasses are finely tuned instruments that support wine enjoyment, it is essential that there is no variation in the design of the goblet and mouth rim diameter, as this is key to the varietal-specific philosophy.
The machine production of such a light and perfectly balanced glass was not previously possible, with existing technology. As a result, a machine was developed in-house that is capable of producing glasses to a quality indistinguishable from handmade. According to Riedel, the design of the new base plates with a diameter of up to 106 mm sets a new technical standard.
The Superleggero Champagne Wine Glass is suitable for Champagne, Cuvee Prestige and Sparkling Wine. Riedel say that the larger bowl is preferable to the traditional flute shape, since it allows for the enjoyment of the full spectrum of champagne flavours.
