Quick Overview: Square stoneware baking dish with lid, 1.9L capacity, grooved handles for secure grip, oven and freezer safe with 10 year guarantee.

Le Creuset Heritage Square Dish 23cm Cerise

The Le Creuset Heritage Square Dish combines versatility with practical design in a 23cm format. The square shape suits a wide range of dishes - from brownies and lasagne to roasted vegetables and marinated meats - whilst the 1.9-litre capacity typically serves 4-6 people. The tight-fitting lid locks in moisture and flavour during cooking, then keeps food warm for serving at the table.

Made in Thailand from Le Creuset's specialist stoneware clays, this dish distributes heat evenly and maintains temperature effectively. The scratch-resistant glaze won't absorb odours or flavours and provides a smooth, easy-to-clean surface. The grooved side handles are specifically designed to provide secure grip even when wearing thick oven gloves - important when handling a dish that weighs 2.69kg empty and significantly more when filled.

Key features include:

  • Square Shape: 23cm versatile format for baking, roasting, grilling, and marinating
  • Tight-Fitting Lid: Retains moisture and flavour during cooking
  • 1.9L Capacity: Serves 4-6 people for most dishes
  • Grooved Handles: Secure grip channels work with oven gloves for safe handling

  • Wide Temperature Range: Freezer to oven, -23°C to 260°C
  • Scratch-Resistant Glaze: Durable surface that won't absorb odours or flavours

This dish is designed for cooks who want a single, versatile piece that handles everything from weeknight suppers to special occasion desserts, with the convenience of freezer-to-oven capability and elegant table presentation in Le Creuset's signature cerise.

What Customers Ask About the Heritage Square Dish

Yes, but maintain at least 6.5cm (2½ inches) gap between the heat source and the top of the dish. This prevents thermal shock and potential cracking. The stoneware can handle grill temperatures within its 260°C maximum, but needs that buffer zone for safe use.

Yes, but never place a frozen dish into a preheated oven - this risks thermal shock and cracking. Instead, place the frozen dish in a cold oven, set your temperature, and allow both to heat up together gradually.

The 1.9-litre capacity is the dish's total volume. With the lid on, you'll want to leave some headroom, so practical cooking capacity is around 1.5-1.7 litres for dishes that might bubble or expand. This comfortably serves 4-6 portions depending on what you're making.

The grooves provide grip channels that work even when wearing thick oven gloves. They prevent the dish from slipping when lifting a heavy, hot dish from the oven. At 2.69kg empty, this dish requires secure handling, and the grooves are specifically designed for this.

Yes, the glazed stoneware is non-reactive and the tight-fitting lid makes it excellent for marinating. The material won't absorb flavours or odours. It's freezer-compatible down to -23°C, so you can also freeze marinades in it if needed.

Care & Use Instructions

Before first use: Remove all labels and packaging. Wash your Le Creuset dish in warm, soapy water, then rinse and dry thoroughly.

Thermal shock prevention: Stoneware is durable but can crack if subjected to sudden temperature changes. Never place a frozen dish into a preheated oven - instead, place it in a cold oven and allow both to heat up together. If heating a room-temperature dish, don't preheat your oven above 205°C. When adding liquid to a dish that's in the oven, remove the dish first and allow it to cool for a few minutes before adding the liquid.

Oven use: Always use oven gloves when handling hot stoneware. The grooved handles provide secure grip even with thick gloves. Before serving, always check food is piping hot throughout.

Under the grill: When using under the grill, maintain at least 6.5cm (2½ inches) gap between the heat source and the top of the dish. This prevents concentrated heat that could cause thermal shock.

Cleaning: Allow the dish to cool before cleaning. Wipe away food residue, or if food is stuck, soak the dish in warm, soapy water for 15-20 minutes before washing. Whilst dishwasher-safe for a full cycle, we recommend hand-washing to help preserve the glaze's lustre over time. Dry thoroughly after washing.

Storage: The dish is freezer-compatible down to -23°C, making it suitable for batch cooking and freezer storage. The square shape stacks and nests efficiently with other dishes. Ensure the dish is completely dry before storing to prevent any moisture issues.

Yes, the scratch-resistant glaze can handle metal utensils during serving. However, avoid cutting or scoring directly on the surface with sharp knives, as this can eventually mark the glaze despite its scratch resistance.

Le Creuset's 10 year guarantee covers manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship. Thermal shock damage from misuse (such as placing a frozen dish in a preheated oven) typically isn't covered, as this results from not following care instructions. Following the thermal shock guidelines prevents such damage.

Yes, Le Creuset stoneware is dishwasher-safe for a full cycle. However, we recommend hand-washing to help preserve the glaze's lustre over time. Hand-washing is gentler and extends the life of the exterior finish.

Never add cold liquid directly to a hot dish - this risks thermal shock and cracking. Le Creuset instructs that if you need to add liquid to a dish in the oven, remove it first and allow it to cool for a few minutes before adding the liquid. Then return it to the oven.

Stoneware is lighter than cast iron (2.69kg vs typically 4-5kg for equivalent cast iron), heats more gently, and is better suited to baking and oven dishes. Cast iron excels at hob-to-oven cooking and high-heat searing. Stoneware is specifically designed for oven use, with excellent heat retention for baking and roasting.
