Could 50% off a Le Creuset Casserole Help You Live Longer

Andrew on holiday, and Jeannes return.

I sometimes fear I’m a bit of a pushover when it comes to trying new lines from our suppliers, not least when Tara, our Le Creuset account manager, persuaded me that I really couldn’t afford not to list Le Creuset’s new colour, Lapis (as in Lazuli) on a short one off run, and at very good pricing…

Presumably I thought… it was a blue (always popular) and 30% ish off, so what could possibly go wrong….

In the meanwhile, I’m away for  the next two weeks so Jeanne will be taking over this job of keeping you up to date. And talking of the girl. She did get back from Sri Lanka in one piece… well mostly. However, they returned her slightly the worse for wear.  She appeared at Heathrow Terminal 4 (where there's no short term carpark, be warned) sporting seven stitches in her head and a scratch from a cat requiring a series of rabies injections.
Consequently, she’s spent the last week wandering around in something of a daze, told to sleep and not think (hah!) whilst her wonderfully supportive colleagues Sally, Debbie and Em have kindly picked up the slack. Seven years ago she had to return post haste from the same neck of the woods, (called Ceylon in my day) because as she arrived there, they started lobbing bombs at each other and the Foreign Office told all UK nationals to get out…
But she insisted that she wanted to go back. WHY….??????????????
Honestly, are these the actions of a responsible adult?
If she were still under 18 I’d have grounded her without a second thought. However, one of the more melancholy discoveries of parenthood is that one’s influence over ones children declines in almost perfect proportion to the number of birthdays they’ve celebrated. So as time passes, one’s role changes from chief decision maker, to that of interested bystander. Occasionally I will offer a suggestion, trying desperately not to sound too much like my own parents, and quietly hope that they make fewer mistakes than I did.
They usually don’t of course. They just make different ones.
And that, of course (if I exit curmudgeon mode for a moment) is a vitally important part of life… making your own mistakes. I just wish she didn’t, on the odd occasion, have to live so close to the edge!!

Can eating together,  lengthen your life?

Talking, not of 'staying alive', but of life enhancements, I’m a bit of a fan of Tim Spector and his Zoe organisation. Earlier this week the people at Zoe sent me an interesting email entitled “Sharing meals is caring for your gut”.

The mail and attachments were rather too detailed to go into here, but the sound bites below give an indication why this email made me sit up and think:

  •  “We evolved to eat together”
  • “Social eating is linked to better health”
  • “We often eat better food in company, and eat slower”
  • “Fermented foods such as yoghurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut and some cheeses help support a diverse gut microbiome, improve mood, energy and can help reduce weight”

Briefly, the Zoe study shows a corelation (not proof it must be said) that there appears to be a link that shows people who regularly share meals with others tend to:

  • report greater happiness and life satisfaction
  • experience lower levels of loneliness and depression
  • have stronger social connections
  • often live longer than those who eat alone regularly
  • This got me thinking about both aspects of the email, eating together and fermented foods.

And in turn, how efficient we’ve become at eating . You know, we can do it whilst sitting at our desks, watching TV, driving the car, answering the phone, painting the ceiling or walking down the street, such are the “clever” ways the food industry has packaged their wares.

Yet I wonder, in doing so, have we stripped away the very thing meals were also designed to achieve? Not just to nourish our bodies, but also to nourish our minds. A balance we seem to increasingly understand is crucial to our overall well being. Is it not a rather lovely thought that, for those of us lucky enough to have that option, sitting around a table talking over supper, maybe doing far more good to our long term health than merely filling our stomachs…?

As for fermented foods, there is more research to do to be able draw conclusions, but a growing body of evidence seems to suggest that they are nutritious, relatively inexpensive, and easy to add to our everyday meals. At present, the current evidence suggests that adding live yoghurt, kefir, kimchi or sauerkraut improves our digestion and mood! For me, this seems like a worthwhile gain with apparently little downside.

To product
Now, as you may have observed from time to time, Paul, who edits this minor work of creativity, gives me extra points when I can think of a connection twixt my preamble and product.
Well, this week I have a pithy and dare I say witty thought that may do just that….. The best casseroles have one thing in common. They positively insist that people sit down together. You can't spend three hours making a beef bourguignon only for someone to wander off and eat it in the car.
Well, you could, but civilisation would be another small step nearer collapse.
Ok, so having made a strong case for using a piece of Le Creuset to achieve a healthier family let's get back to Lapis (lazuli).
What went wrong?
They sold like curb stones… in fact I’ve a feeling that even curb stones might sell better. So, what to do?  Bribery came immediately to mind. I’m not much of a sales person, as you know.
However, I did overhear someone say, 'oh, they’d make lovely  wedding presents, wouldn’t they.’
So, if anyone is still getting married these days and as a consequence you find yourself in need of a showcase piece to give to a son, a daughter, a nephew or niece, then a Le Creuset cast iron casserole at HALF PRICE has got to be tempting hasn’t it?

So there you have it.
That’s my selling pitch.
Pitiful though it may be, I’m going to keep my fingers crossed that you're either kind enough to take it off my hands, or it's just what you need for that special occasion, or you just love the Lapis colour.
Only buying Le Creuset in one colour is an approach some favour, but as a fairly universal blue, Lapis also looks good when combined with some of Le Creuset's other colours such as Volcanic, Meringue or Cerise.

The last word

There is also, I realise, an underlying theme that runs throughout this email.

And it’s a theme of care.

Taking care of each other and ourselves ....  especially when travelling to Ceylon!

I trust you have a pleasant and peaceful weekend.
Warm regards,
Andrew

I sometimes think trying to understand a potential customers likes/ dislikes is very difficult to say the least, Like things that sell at antique auctions. When u think ‘who an earth would buy that’ and it goes for a fortune. I think selling at half price is a good idea but perhaps not sustainable ploy ( ps we bought one of your lemon squeezers very good. I know it’s not solving the blue le creuset stock, but every little helps
