What Customers Ask About Robert Welch Signature Carving Fork
What makes this carving fork different from a regular fork?
This is a specialist carving fork with a forged double-tine head and guard, designed specifically for holding meat steady whilst carving and for lifting and turning meat during cooking. The tines are longer and stronger than a table fork, the guard protects your hand, and the ergonomic handle provides better control and balance for kitchen tasks.
Can I use this fork for cooking as well as carving?
Yes, the carving fork is designed for dual use. Use it to hold meat steady whilst carving at the table, and also to lift and turn meat during cooking in the oven or on the hob. The hardened stainless steel construction can withstand high temperatures.
Is this fork dishwasher safe?
Whilst the fork can technically go in the dishwasher, hand washing is strongly recommended to maintain the handle's appearance and prolong the life of the fork. Rinse after use, wash in warm soapy water with a microfibre cloth, dry thoroughly immediately, and avoid soaking.
What does Rockwell 56 hardness mean?
Rockwell 56 refers to the hardness rating of the German stainless steel used. This hardness level provides excellent durability and strength whilst remaining practical for kitchen use. It means the fork's tines will maintain their shape and strength even with regular use on dense meats.
How do I maintain the handle?
Periodically apply a mineral oil to the handle to maintain its colour and appearance. Remove any excess oil after application. Always dry the handle thoroughly after washing and avoid soaking to prevent any deterioration.
What's the purpose of the guard on the fork?
The guard sits between the tines and the handle to protect your hand from hot meat juices and to prevent your hand from slipping forward onto the tines when applying pressure during carving. It's a safety feature that also provides better control.

Care & Use Instructions
Before first use: Remove from gift box and packaging. Wash in warm soapy water using a microfibre cloth, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely before first use.
Daily cleaning (recommended method): Hand washing is strongly recommended to maintain the fork's appearance and prolong its life. Rinse the fork to remove all traces of food as soon as possible after use. Wash in warm soapy water with a microfibre cloth or non-abrasive brush. Avoid soaking. Always dry thoroughly immediately after washing using a microfibre cloth.
Handle maintenance: Periodically apply a mineral oil to the handle to maintain its colour and appearance. This is particularly important if you notice the handle beginning to look dry. Apply a small amount of mineral oil, work it into the handle material, and remove any excess with a clean cloth.
During use: Use the fork to hold meat steady whilst carving, inserting the tines firmly into the joint. The guard protects your hand from hot juices. You can also use the fork to lift and turn meat during cooking—the hardened stainless steel can withstand high oven temperatures.
Storage: Store in a knife block, drawer insert, or on a magnetic strip where the tines won't come into contact with other utensils. This prevents damage to both the fork and other items. Ensure the fork is completely dry before storing.
Important care notes:
- The fork is made from hardened stainless steel, but dropping it on hard surfaces may cause damage to the tines or tip
- Don't use the fork on non-stick surfaces as the metal tines will damage the coating
- Avoid leaving the fork soaking in water, particularly for extended periods
- Don't use abrasive cleaners, steel wool, or scouring pads which could scratch the finish
- If the fork develops any rust spots (unlikely with proper care), remove them with a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water, then rinse and dry thoroughly
Why hand washing matters: Whilst the stainless steel can technically withstand dishwasher cycles, the high temperatures and harsh detergents in dishwashers can gradually affect the handle's appearance. Hand washing takes just moments and significantly extends the life of your carving fork.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I've used it and don't like it?
Return it anyway. Our no quibble guarantee covers used items - if it doesn't do what you wanted, we'll refund you. This applies even after you've used it.
How does the Half-Price Replacement guarantee work?
Valid for 2 years from purchase date. If you accidentally break this item, we'll replace it at half price with proof of purchase and evidence of breakage. Photos of the damage are acceptable.
Does the Robert Welch Lifetime Guarantee cover accidental damage?
The manufacturer's lifetime guarantee covers defects in materials and workmanship. Our own Half-Price Accidental Damage Replacement covers breakage from drops or accidents for the first 2 years. Contact us to determine which guarantee applies to your situation.
Will this fork match Robert Welch Signature knives?
Yes, this carving fork is part of the award-winning Robert Welch Signature knife range and features the same handle design and RW insignia detail. It coordinates perfectly with Signature carving knives and other pieces in the collection.
How long is the fork including the handle?
The total length is 300mm (30cm). The carving fork head itself is 18cm, with the remaining length being the handle. This provides good reach and leverage for carving larger joints of meat.
Can I use this fork on non-stick cookware?
We don't recommend using metal utensils on non-stick surfaces as they can damage the coating. Reserve this carving fork for use on roasting tins, carving boards, or when lifting meat from non-coated cookware.
What's the difference between 430 stainless steel and other grades?
430 stainless steel is a high-quality ferritic steel that offers excellent corrosion resistance and durability. When hardened to Rockwell 56 as Robert Welch does, it provides the strength needed for professional kitchen tools whilst remaining easy to clean and maintain.
Can I sharpen the tines if they become dull?
The tines on a carving fork shouldn't need sharpening—they're designed to pierce and hold meat rather than cut. If the tines become bent or damaged, contact us or Robert Welch to discuss options under the lifetime guarantee.
What mineral oil should I use for the handle?
Use food-safe mineral oil (also called food-grade mineral oil or cutting board oil). This is available from most kitchenware shops or online. Apply sparingly and buff off any excess with a clean cloth.
How long does delivery take?
Standard delivery to mainland UK addresses can take up to 7 working days, but is usually 3-4, and is free for orders over £49. Next day delivery may be available for £9.95 on orders placed before 1pm Monday to Thursday, depending on your location and our stock levels. You can also collect from our shops in Cobham or Reigate, or our warehouse in Redhill.
