Quick Overview: The Sage Smart Grinder Pro is a conical burr grinder with 60 grind settings and programmable dosing for espresso, filter, and French press.

The Smart Grinder Pro is a conical burr grinder designed to work across every brew method, from espresso through to French press. Sixty grind settings and precision digital timing in 0.2 second increments give you fine control over both grind size and dose, whether you're grinding directly into a portafilter, an airtight container, a gold tone filter basket, or a paper filter. An LCD screen shows your grind setting, grind time, and the number of shots or cups selected, so you can repeat a result accurately each time. The stainless steel conical burrs and a 450g bean hopper make it a capable everyday grinder that works equally well as a standalone home setup or paired with an espresso machine.

  • 60 grind settings: Sixty individual settings cover the full range from fine espresso to coarse French press, with enough steps in between to dial in most brew methods accurately.
  • Precision digital timing: Grind time is adjustable in 0.2 second increments, allowing you to program a consistent dose and repeat it reliably each time.
  • Shots and cups dosing modes: Select between shots mode for espresso or cups mode for filter and French press, with the LCD displaying grind setting, time, and your selected dose.
  • Flexible grinding output: The grinder works directly into a portafilter using the included cradles, an airtight container, a gold tone filter basket, or a paper filter.
  • Stainless steel conical burrs: Stainless steel conical burrs grind beans consistently across all 60 settings, with a 450g bean hopper for everyday capacity.

What Customers Ask About This Product

Which portafilter sizes does it fit?

The Smart Grinder Pro comes with two portafilter cradles: one for 50-54mm portafilters and one for 58mm. These cover the most common sizes used on home espresso machines, including Sage's own range.

Can I grind straight into a paper filter or filter basket?

Yes. As well as the portafilter cradles, the grinder is designed to work with a gold tone filter basket and paper filters. The included grinds container with lid and sealing cap is also useful if you want to grind in advance and store the coffee before brewing.

How do I know which grind setting to start with?

The 60 settings are arranged from finest to coarsest, and the LCD screen shows your current setting clearly. For espresso, starting around the finer end and adjusting based on extraction time is the standard approach. Sage has also partnered with the BILT app, which provides interactive setup guidance to help you get started.

How do I clean the burrs?

A conical burr cleaning brush is included for removing ground coffee from the burrs and grinding chamber. Regular brushing after use helps maintain grind consistency and prevents stale coffee oils from building up. Check the manual for guidance on deeper cleaning and burr removal.

In our experience...

Grind size has more impact on flavour than most people expect. Even small adjustments to grind size change the rate at which water passes through the coffee and how much is extracted. Too fine and the result is bitter and over-extracted; too coarse and it tastes weak and sour. Dialling in grind size is the single most effective way to improve a cup.

Consistency matters as much as the setting itself. A grinder that produces an even particle size gives you predictable, repeatable results. Inconsistent grind size means some particles over-extract and others under-extract in the same brew, which muddies the flavour regardless of how good the beans are.

Grind fresh, grind to order. Coffee starts losing its volatile aromatics within minutes of grinding. Grinding immediately before brewing gives noticeably better results than grinding in advance, particularly for espresso where the difference in freshness is more pronounced than in longer brew methods.

Dose weight is worth measuring when dialling in espresso. The programmable timer gives you a consistent grind time, but bean density varies between roasts, so the same time setting can produce different weights. Weighing your dose when switching to a new coffee and adjusting the time accordingly keeps your extraction consistent.

Burr grinders produce a more even grind than blade grinders. Blade grinders chop coffee randomly, producing a mix of fine powder and coarse chunks. Burr grinders crush beans between two abrasive surfaces at a set distance, which gives a much more uniform particle size. The difference in cup quality is significant enough that it's usually the first upgrade worth making.

Care & Use Instructions

Daily cleaning: Brush out the grinding chamber and burrs with the included cleaning brush after each use to remove residual ground coffee. This prevents stale coffee oils from building up and affecting the flavour of future brews.

Cleaning the hopper and container: Remove and wipe out the bean hopper regularly, particularly when switching between different coffees. The grinds container and lid can be washed with warm soapy water and dried thoroughly before use.

Deep cleaning the burrs: The burrs should be removed and cleaned periodically. Refer to the manual or the BILT app for step-by-step guidance on burr removal and reassembly. Do not wash burrs in water; brush clean only.

What to avoid: Do not put the main unit or burrs in the dishwasher or immerse in water. Do not grind anything other than roasted coffee beans. Avoid storing the grinder with beans left in the hopper for extended periods, as this can cause oils to go stale and affect grind quality.

Rest of the World

If your country is not listed — including the USA, Australia, and other destinations — this is most likely because couriers charge by volumetric weight: a combination of package size and weight that makes standard online rates impractical to calculate automatically.

Please call us on 01737 222996 with the details of your order. We will advise on shipping costs within 24 hours and ask whether you would like to proceed.

Before you order internationally, please note:

All overseas shipments are at your own risk. We recommend taking out appropriate transit insurance to cover any damage in transit.

Customs forms for all international packages declare the full value and a description of the contents. Any customs or import duties levied on arrival in your country are your responsibility. Your local customs office can provide further information.
