Quick Overview: Wade Earthenware Fish Gluggle Jug Large, 1200ml. Handcrafted in Stoke-on-Trent since the mid-1800s. Produces a glugging sound when poured. Available in 12 colours.

The Wade Fish Gluggle Jug is one of those designs that has stayed in continuous production since the mid-1800s because it works on every level: it is genuinely useful as a jug, vase, or decanter, and genuinely pleasing to look at on a shelf. The large version holds 1200ml and is handcrafted in Stoke-on-Trent using traditional slip casting techniques from premium earthenware clay. Pour it when three-quarters full and air bubbles escaping through the fish's tail create the signature glugging sound that gives the jug its name. It comes with a one-year guarantee, extendable to two years on registration, and is available in twelve colours. Also available in a small 600ml version.

  • Handcrafted in Stoke-on-Trent: Each jug is made individually using traditional slip casting techniques in Stoke-on-Trent, continuing a production method that dates back to the mid-1800s.
  • Signature glugging sound: When poured at three-quarters full, air bubbles escape through the fish's tail and produce the characteristic glugging sound the design is named for.
  • 1200ml capacity: The large size holds 1200ml, making it well suited for use as a water jug, a vase for flowers, a decanter for cordials, or a decorative piece on a shelf or windowsill.
  • Premium earthenware construction: Made from high-quality earthenware clay, the jug is durable and substantial in the hand, with a glazed finish that holds colour consistently across the range.
  • Twelve colour options: Available in Agave (Teal), Cobalt Blue, Eau De Nil, Forest Green, Grey, Orange, Pink, Red, Sage Green, Sea Blue, White, and Yellow, covering a wide range of kitchen and interior palettes.

What Customers Ask About This Product

How does the glugging sound work?

The jug needs to be roughly three-quarters full to produce the sound. As you pour, the liquid displacement causes air to enter through the fish's tail in bursts, creating the characteristic glug-glug noise. If the jug is too full or too empty the effect is reduced, so the fill level makes a difference.

Can this be used as a vase as well as a jug?

Yes. The wide opening suits flowers with shorter or medium stems, and the fish shape makes it an unusual and attractive vase. It also works well as a decanter for cordials or as a decorative piece on a windowsill or shelf without any liquid in it at all.

Is there a smaller version available?

Yes. The Gluggle Jug is also available in a small 600ml version, which suits the same uses but on a smaller scale and is easier to handle for younger users or smaller tables.

What is the guarantee?

The jug comes with a one-year guarantee as standard. Registering the product extends this to two years. Contact us or Wade directly for details on how to register.

In our experience...

The glugging effect depends on fill level, not on how you pour. A common question in store is whether you need a special pouring technique to get the sound. You do not. The key is filling the jug to roughly three-quarters before pouring. The shape of the tail and body does the rest automatically.

Slip casting is a labour-intensive process that produces a consistent result. Liquid clay is poured into a plaster mould, which absorbs moisture and leaves a clay shell that is then fired and glazed. Each jug is made individually, which means there can be very slight variations in the glaze finish from piece to piece. That is part of what makes a handmade piece different from a mass-produced one.

The Gluggle Jug has been in continuous production for over 170 years. That kind of longevity is unusual for any product. It suggests the design solves its brief well enough that there has never been a need to fundamentally change it. The colours have evolved over the years, but the fish shape and the glugging mechanism are essentially unchanged from the original.

It works as a gift for people who are difficult to buy for. The Gluggle Jug is practical enough to be used daily but distinctive enough to feel like a considered gift rather than a generic one. The range of colours means there is usually one that suits the recipient's kitchen or personality, and the story behind the design gives it conversational value beyond the object itself.

Hand washing preserves the glaze over time. Earthenware glazes can craze or dull with repeated dishwasher use. Hand washing with warm soapy water keeps the finish looking its best and is straightforward given the jug's open shape and wide mouth, which makes rinsing easy.

Care & Use Instructions

Washing: Hand wash only with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry fully before storing or use as a vase. The wide mouth and open shape make it straightforward to clean with a bottle brush if needed.

What to avoid: Do not put in the dishwasher. Repeated dishwasher use can cause the glaze to craze or dull over time. Do not soak for extended periods.

Use as a vase: If using as a flower vase, empty and rinse after each arrangement to prevent residue build-up. A small bottle brush or cotton cloth on a stick will reach the inside of the body.

Rest of the World

If your country is not listed — including the USA, Australia, and other destinations — this is most likely because couriers charge by volumetric weight: a combination of package size and weight that makes standard online rates impractical to calculate automatically.

Please call us on 01737 222996 with the details of your order. We will advise on shipping costs within 24 hours and ask whether you would like to proceed.

Before you order internationally, please note:

All overseas shipments are at your own risk. We recommend taking out appropriate transit insurance to cover any damage in transit.

Customs forms for all international packages declare the full value and a description of the contents. Any customs or import duties levied on arrival in your country are your responsibility. Your local customs office can provide further information.
