Quick Overview: The Crushgrind Bergen is a compact 12cm mill in FSC-certified ash wood with a CrushGrind ceramic mechanism, available in eight colour finishes and backed by a 25-year guarantee on ceramic parts.

Crushgrind Bergen Salt and Pepper Mill

The Bergen is a compact, cylindrical mill designed by Crushgrind in collaboration with designer Sam Murley. At 12cm tall, it sits neatly on the table without commanding it, and the clean cylindrical form works equally well in contemporary kitchens and more traditional settings. It is sold individually, so you can choose one as a salt mill, one as a pepper mill, or use it for whichever dried spice you prefer.

The body is crafted from FSC-certified ash wood, a material chosen for its durability and smooth surface finish. Inside, the CrushGrind ceramic mechanism adjusts from fine to coarse grind and is designed to handle whole dried spices beyond the standard salt and pepper - coriander seeds, dried chilli flakes, and similar whole spices are within its range. Ceramic mechanisms resist corrosion from salt and moisture, which means they tend to outlast metal alternatives without dulling over time.

Key features include:

  • FSC-certified ash wood: Sustainably sourced timber with a smooth, tactile finish, available in eight colour options
  • CrushGrind ceramic mechanism: Adjustable from fine to coarse, suitable for salt, pepper, and whole dried spices
  • 25-year guarantee on ceramic parts: Manufacturer-backed longevity commitment on the grinding mechanism
  • Compact 12cm height: Practical for table use without being unwieldy; sold individually for flexible pairing
  • Eight colour finishes: Black Ash, Bright Yellow, Indigo Blue, Lilac Purple, Oak, Racing Green, Smoked Oak, and White Sand
  • Versatile grinding: Designed for whole dried spices as well as salt and pepper

The Bergen suits both everyday use and gift-giving - the colour range makes it straightforward to find one that fits a particular kitchen aesthetic, and the 25-year ceramic guarantee gives it genuine longevity credentials.

What Customers Ask About the Crushgrind Bergen Mill

Is this sold as a pair or individually?

The Bergen is sold individually, one mill per order. This gives you flexibility to choose your preferred colour for each, or to use the mill for whichever spice suits you. If you want both a salt and a pepper mill, you will need to add two to your basket - selecting your preferred colour for each.

What spices can I use this for beyond salt and pepper?

The CrushGrind ceramic mechanism is designed for whole, dried spices - so coriander seeds, black pepper, pink peppercorns, and similar whole dried spices are suitable. Crushgrind recommend dried rather than fresh or oily spices, as moisture and oils can affect the mechanism over time. Avoid grinding anything with a high moisture content.

How do I adjust the grind from fine to coarse?

Turn the adjustment wheel clockwise for a finer grind, and anticlockwise for a coarser grind. The adjustment is straightforward and can be changed mid-use to suit different dishes or personal preference.

Why choose ceramic over a metal mechanism?

Ceramic mechanisms do not corrode when exposed to salt or moisture, which makes them more durable for long-term use. They also maintain their sharpness over time, whereas metal mechanisms can dull with repeated use. The 25-year guarantee on the Bergen's ceramic parts reflects this durability advantage.

How do I choose between the colour options?

The eight finishes range from natural wood tones (Oak, Smoked Oak) through neutral shades (White Sand, Black Ash) to bolder statement colours (Bright Yellow, Indigo Blue, Lilac Purple, Racing Green). The natural wood options sit comfortably in most kitchen styles, whilst the coloured finishes work well as deliberate accents or matched pairs. If in doubt, contact us and we can advise based on your kitchen's colour scheme.

Is the Bergen dishwasher safe?

No - the Bergen should not go in the dishwasher and should not be submerged in water. The ash wood body requires dry or lightly damp cleaning only, and the ceramic mechanism needs to be thoroughly dried if cleaned with water. Full care instructions are in the Care section below.

Materials & Sustainability

FSC-certified ash wood: The Bergen's body is made from ash wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), which means the timber is sourced from forests managed to environmental and social standards. The FSC certification is verifiable through Crushgrind's product documentation.

Care & Use Instructions

Daily cleaning: Wipe the exterior with a dry cloth after use. Do not submerge the mill in water or place it in the dishwasher, as this will damage both the ash wood body and the internal grinding mechanism.

Adjusting grind size: Turn the adjustment wheel clockwise for a finer grind, anticlockwise for a coarser grind. Adjust as needed to suit different dishes.

Switching between spices: Grind a tablespoon of coarse salt through the mill to clear residues from the ceramic parts before switching to a different spice.

Deep cleaning the mechanism: Unscrew the adjustment wheel and carefully remove the ceramic cone. Use a stiff brush to clean both the grinder stone and the cone. If needed, immerse the ceramic cone in warm water to dissolve any remaining residue - but ensure all ceramic parts are completely dry before reassembling. Crushgrind recommend allowing at least 24 hours drying time before use.

Wood care: The ash wood body does not require oiling or treatment under normal use. Avoid prolonged contact with water or damp surfaces, and store in a dry location.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I've used it and don't like it?

Return it anyway. Our no quibble guarantee covers used items - if it doesn't do what you wanted, we'll refund you. This applies even after you've ground with it.

How does the Half-Price Replacement guarantee work?

Valid for 2 years from purchase date. If you accidentally damage the mill, we'll replace it at half the current retail price with proof of purchase and evidence of damage. Photos of the damage are acceptable.

How long does delivery take?

Standard delivery to mainland UK addresses can take up to 7 working days, but is usually 3-4, and is free for orders over £49. Next day delivery may be available for £9.95 on orders placed before 1pm Monday to Thursday, depending on your location and our stock levels. You can also collect from our shops in Cobham or Reigate, or our warehouse in Redhill.

Does the 25-year ceramic guarantee come from Crushgrind or from you?

The 25-year guarantee on ceramic parts is a manufacturer's guarantee provided by Crushgrind and applies to the ceramic grinding mechanism. Our own guarantees - no quibble returns and half-price accidental damage replacement - are separate and additional to this. If you have a claim under the Crushgrind ceramic guarantee, contact us and we will assist you in the process.

Can I buy just one, or do I need to buy a salt and pepper pair?

You can buy just one. The Bergen is sold individually, so you can order a single mill for salt, a single mill for pepper, or one for any other dried spice you use regularly. Simply select your preferred colour and add the quantity you need.

Will this price match against other retailers?

Yes. If you've seen the identical Crushgrind Bergen - same size, same colour, same specification - available cheaper elsewhere, let us know. If it's in stock with our competitor on the day you contact us, we'll match the price.

Rest of the World

If your country is not listed — including the USA, Australia, and other destinations — this is most likely because couriers charge by volumetric weight: a combination of package size and weight that makes standard online rates impractical to calculate automatically.

Please call us on 01737 222996 with the details of your order. We will advise on shipping costs within 24 hours and ask whether you would like to proceed.

Before you order internationally, please note:

All overseas shipments are at your own risk. We recommend taking out appropriate transit insurance to cover any damage in transit.

Customs forms for all international packages declare the full value and a description of the contents. Any customs or import duties levied on arrival in your country are your responsibility. Your local customs office can provide further information.
