The Smart Scoop is an ice cream maker that takes the guesswork out of frozen desserts. Rather than relying on timers alone, it automatically senses the hardness of the mixture based on your chosen setting and stops churning when it's ready. Twelve hardness settings cover sorbet, frozen yogurt, gelato, and ice cream, with four pre-programmed options or full manual control if you prefer. A keep-cool function holds the finished dessert at the right temperature for up to 3 hours, so it's ready to serve when you are rather than needing to be eaten immediately. The 1L bowl, removable paddle, and included cleaning brush make it straightforward to use and clean up afterwards.
- Automatic hardness sensing: The machine senses the consistency of the mixture as it churns and stops automatically when your chosen hardness level is reached.
- 12 hardness settings: Twelve settings cover the full range from sorbet through to firm ice cream, with pre-programmed modes for sorbet, frozen yogurt, gelato, and ice cream.
- Keeps chilled for up to 3 hours: Once churning is complete, the machine holds the finished dessert at serving temperature for up to 3 hours without it melting or hardening further.
- Pre-cool function: The bowl can be pre-cooled to the optimal operating temperature before you add your mixture, which helps the churning process start from the right point.
- Removable bowl and paddle: The 1L BPA-free bowl and paddle are both removable for easy cleaning, and a cleaning brush is included.
What Customers Ask About This Product
Do I need to freeze the bowl in advance?
No. Unlike many ice cream makers that require the bowl to be frozen overnight before use, the Smart Scoop has a built-in compressor that chills the bowl itself. The pre-cool function brings it down to the right temperature before you add your mixture.
Can I make dairy-free or vegan ice cream with it?
The machine churns any mixture you put in it, so dairy-free recipes using coconut milk, oat milk, or other bases should work in the same way as standard ice cream. Results will depend on the recipe rather than the machine, as fat and sugar content affect how the mixture freezes and churns.
How does the alert work when the dessert is ready?
The Smart Scoop can be set to alert you with a beep, a musical tune, or muted entirely when the dessert is ready. This is useful if you're leaving the machine to run unattended and want to know when it's done without having to check on it.
Is the bowl dishwasher safe?
The bowl and paddle are removable for cleaning. Sage has not confirmed dishwasher safety in the product specifications, so we'd recommend checking the manual before putting them in the dishwasher. The included cleaning brush is designed for the paddle and bowl.
In our experience...
A colder mixture churns faster and smoother. Starting with a mixture that has been thoroughly chilled in the fridge before it goes into the machine gives a better result than adding it at room temperature. The colder the base, the less work the compressor has to do and the smaller the ice crystals that form, which makes for a creamier texture.
Fat and sugar both affect how ice cream freezes. Higher fat content produces a creamier, softer scoop. More sugar lowers the freezing point, which keeps the texture softer but can also slow the hardening process. Recipes that are very low in both fat and sugar tend to freeze harder and icier, which is worth bearing in mind when adapting recipes.
Overchurning is a real thing. Churning too long after the mixture has set can introduce excess air or cause the texture to break down. The automatic hardness sensing on the Smart Scoop is there specifically to stop this happening, but if you're using manual settings it's worth keeping an eye on the consistency rather than just leaving it to run.
Mix-ins go in at the end, not the beginning. Chocolate chips, fruit pieces, or nuts added at the start of churning tend to get broken down or sink. Adding them in the last few minutes of churning distributes them evenly without breaking them up.
The keep-cool function buys you flexibility, not indefinite holding time. Three hours of holding time is genuinely useful for timing around a meal, but ice cream left on keep-cool for the full duration will gradually change in texture. For the best result, serve it within an hour or two of the churn finishing.

Care & Use Instructions
Before first use: Wash the bowl and paddle with warm soapy water and dry thoroughly before use. Wipe the interior of the machine with a damp cloth.
After each use: Remove the bowl and paddle once the machine has finished and any remaining dessert has been scooped out. Wash both with warm soapy water and a soft cloth or the included cleaning brush. Allow to dry fully before reassembling.
Cleaning the paddle: Use the included cleaning brush to remove any mixture from the paddle mechanism and the areas around the bowl fitting. Dried mixture in these areas can affect performance over time.
What to avoid: Do not immerse the main unit in water. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scourers on the bowl or paddle. Check the manual before placing any components in the dishwasher. Do not attempt to remove or clean the compressor mechanism yourself.
