Before first use: Remove all labels and packaging. Wash the steamer and glass lid in warm, soapy water, then rinse and dry thoroughly.
Setting up: Fill your Le Creuset 3-Ply Stainless Steel saucepan (16cm, 18cm, or 20cm) with 2-3cm depth of water. Place the steamer insert on top - the stepped base will sit securely on your chosen pan size. Ensure the water level doesn't touch the bottom of the steamer.
Single-level steaming: Place ingredients in the steamer basket, ensuring they're in a single layer for even cooking. Cover with the glass lid. Bring water to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Steam times vary by ingredient - typically 3-5 minutes for tender vegetables, 5-8 minutes for firmer vegetables, 8-12 minutes for fish, and 15-20 minutes for dumplings.
Two-level steaming: For cooking multiple ingredients, place the first steamer on your pan with ingredients that require longer cooking (like potatoes or carrots). Stack the second steamer on top with quicker-cooking items (like broccoli or fish). Cover the top steamer with the glass lid. This setup allows you to cook an entire meal simultaneously.
During cooking: Monitor through the glass lid rather than lifting it frequently - each time you lift the lid, steam escapes and cooking slows.
