Quick Overview: The Riedel Superleggero Champagne glass is a 464ml machine-made lead-free crystal glass with an egg-shaped bowl and sparkling point — designed to showcase Champagne, Cuvée Prestige and sparkling wines by encouraging bubble formation and concentrating aromatics.

The Riedel Superleggero Champagne glass moves away from the traditional narrow flute in favour of an egg-shaped bowl that lets Champagne's aromatics develop more fully. Where a flute channels bubbles and restricts the surface area, the wider bowl allows the wine's bouquet — fruit, toast, brioche, autolytic complexity — to open up before reaching the nose. A sparkling point etched into the base encourages steady, fine bubble formation. The result is a glass that shows Champagne the way the best producers intend it to be experienced, rather than simply displaying the bubbles.

  • Egg-shaped bowl: The wider, rounded bowl allows Champagne's aromatics to develop and concentrate before reaching the nose — a significant departure from a traditional flute, which restricts the surface area and limits how the wine expresses itself.
  • Sparkling point: A point etched into the base encourages steady, fine bubble formation from a consistent source, improving the visual and sensory experience in the glass.
  • 464ml capacity: Larger than a standard flute, giving the wine room to breathe. The correct pour is a standard 125ml measure, leaving the upper portion of the bowl free to gather aromas.
  • Machine-made on Riedel's own equipment: Produced on an in-house machine for consistent bowl geometry and rim diameter across every glass in the range.
  • Lead-free crystal: Made from lead-free crystal for clarity and a light, balanced feel in the hand.

What Customers Ask About This Product

Why is the Superleggero Champagne glass egg-shaped rather than a flute?

A wider bowl gives Champagne's aromatics more surface area to develop. A narrow flute shows the bubbles but restricts how the wine's bouquet — the fruit, toast and autolytic characters — reaches the nose. Riedel's egg-shaped bowl delivers a more complete sensory experience.

What is the sparkling point?

A point etched into the base of the bowl that acts as a nucleation site — a consistent source for fine bubble formation throughout the pour.

Can this glass be used for still white wine?

Yes. The bowl shape also works well for aromatic whites and light-bodied wines where a wider rim than a flute would be beneficial.

Care & Use Instructions

Hand washing recommended: Wash in warm (not hot) water with a small amount of mild detergent. Hold the glass by the base and support the bowl gently — avoid gripping the stem.

Dry immediately: Dry straight away with a clean, lint-free microfibre cloth. This prevents water spots and keeps the glass clear. Do not hold the base and twist the bowl while drying.

Dishwasher use: If using a dishwasher, use the gentlest cycle at no more than 50°C. Place on the upper rack with glasses not touching each other. Avoid lemon-scented or abrasive detergents. Open the door and allow to air dry rather than using the drying cycle.

Remove water spots: A small amount of white vinegar added to the final rinse water helps prevent and remove mineral deposits and water spots.

Storage: Store upright in a clean, dry cupboard. Never stack glasses or store rim-down, as the rim is the most delicate part of the glass.

It is not currently possible to deliver to the Republic of Ireland or mainland Europe. We hope to reinstate this service as soon as possible and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Rest of the World

If your country is not listed — including the USA, Australia, and other destinations — this is most likely because couriers charge by volumetric weight: a combination of package size and weight that makes standard online rates impractical to calculate automatically.

Please call us on 01737 222996 with the details of your order. We will advise on shipping costs within 24 hours and ask whether you would like to proceed.

Before you order internationally, please note:

All overseas shipments are at your own risk. We recommend taking out appropriate transit insurance to cover any damage in transit.

Customs forms for all international packages declare the full value and a description of the contents. Any customs or import duties levied on arrival in your country are your responsibility. Your local customs office can provide further information.

If your desired country or region is not listed, please contact us and we will do our best to help.
