The Bambino is Sage's entry point into proper espresso at home, but don't let the compact footprint fool you. It uses the same 54mm portafilter and 18g dose found on professional machines, and its ThermoJet heating system gets up to temperature in just 3 seconds. A 15 bar Italian pump with low-pressure pre-infusion gives you full-bodied espresso with real depth of flavour. The manual steam wand produces microfoam suitable for latte art, and one-touch volumetric controls keep the daily routine straightforward. It's a well-rounded machine for anyone who wants genuine espresso at home without a steep learning curve or a large footprint on the worktop.
- 3-second heat-up: The ThermoJet heating system reaches optimal extraction temperature in just 3 seconds, so there's no waiting around before your first cup.
- Professional 54mm portafilter: An 18g dose delivered through a 54mm portafilter mirrors the setup used in professional café machines, giving you proper full-bodied espresso.
- 15 bar pump with pre-infusion: Low-pressure pre-infusion followed by a 9 bar extraction process draws out rich, complex flavour from the coffee grounds.
- Manual steam wand: The steam wand is designed to produce smooth, silky microfoam quickly, giving you the texture needed for latte art and milk-based drinks.
- Compact and simple to use: One-touch volumetric controls for 1 and 2 shots, steam, and hot water are housed in a machine small enough to sit comfortably in most kitchens.
What Customers Ask About This Product
Do I need a separate grinder, or can I use pre-ground coffee?
You can use pre-ground coffee with the Bambino using the included dual-wall filter baskets, which are more forgiving of a less precise grind. If you want to get the most out of the machine, a burr grinder will make a noticeable difference to flavour, but it's not a requirement to get started.
What's included in the box?
The Bambino comes with single and dual-wall filter baskets for 1 and 2 cups, a 480ml stainless steel milk jug, an aluminium portafilter, a plastic tamper, a steam wand tip cleaning tool, a ClaroSwiss filter holder and water filter, descale powder, and a cleaning kit.
How do I descale the Bambino?
Sage recommends descaling when the machine prompts you, though the frequency will depend on your water hardness. The included descale powder can be used for this. Using the ClaroSwiss water filter in the tank can help slow the build-up of limescale between descales.
Is the Bambino suitable for someone new to espresso?
It's one of the more approachable machines in Sage's range. The controls are straightforward, and Sage has partnered with the BILT app for interactive setup guidance, which makes getting started easier than working through a manual. The dual-wall filter baskets included are also helpful for beginners as they're more forgiving than the single-wall versions.
In our experience...
Your grinder will affect results more than you expect. Even a good espresso machine can only work with what it's given. A consistent, fine grind from a burr grinder makes a real difference to flavour and extraction, and it's often the first upgrade worth making after the machine itself.
Milk temperature is easy to get wrong. Microfoam for latte art sits in a fairly narrow temperature range, around 60-65°C. Too cool and it won't integrate properly; too hot and it loses its texture. A thermometer helps when you're learning, though with practice you'll start to feel it through the jug.
Pre-infusion makes extraction more forgiving. Wetting the coffee grounds gently before the main extraction allows water to distribute more evenly, which helps compensate for small inconsistencies in tamping or grind. It's one of the details that separates a well-engineered machine from a basic one.
Tamping pressure matters, but consistency matters more. A firm, even tamp is what you're aiming for rather than a specific number of kilograms of pressure. Uneven tamping leads to channelling, where water finds the path of least resistance and extracts unevenly. A level tamp makes a bigger difference than a heavy one.
Descaling regularly keeps the machine performing well. Limescale build-up affects water temperature, flow rate, and eventually the pump. Regular descaling, particularly if you're in a hard water area, keeps extraction consistent and extends the life of the machine noticeably.

Care & Use Instructions
Before first use: Run a cycle of clean water through the machine before making your first coffee. This flushes out any residue from manufacturing and conditions the system.
Daily cleaning: Rinse the portafilter, filter baskets, and drip tray after each use. Purge the steam wand briefly before and after steaming milk to prevent milk residue from drying inside the tip.
Steam wand care: Wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth immediately after each use and use the included steam wand tip cleaning tool regularly to keep the tip clear. Dried milk inside the wand tip affects steam performance.
Water filter: The included ClaroSwiss water filter sits in the tank and helps reduce limescale build-up. Replace it as recommended by Sage, typically every 2-3 months depending on your water hardness and usage.
Descaling: Descale the machine when prompted. Use the included descale powder or a Sage-approved descaling solution. Do not use generic descalers, as these may damage internal components.
What to avoid: Do not immerse the machine in water. The machine itself is not dishwasher safe. Check the individual accessories: the stainless steel milk jug and filter baskets can typically be washed normally, but refer to the manual for confirmation on each item.
