Quick Overview: An integrated burr grinder and manual steam wand in one machine, with Thermocoil heating, PID temperature control, and a pressure gauge for dialling in your espresso.

Sage: The Barista Express

The Barista Express brings together the two things you need for proper home espresso in a single machine: a conical burr grinder and a 54mm portafilter, so you go from whole beans to espresso in under a minute. The Thermocoil heating system maintains water at exactly 93°C for consistent extraction, and the pressure gauge gives you real feedback on how each shot is pulling. The manual steam wand means there is a technique to develop, but that is also what makes it satisfying. If you want a machine that teaches you to make better espresso rather than doing everything for you, this is one of the best places to start.

  • Integrated conical burr grinder: Steel conical burrs with 16 precision grind settings grind fresh beans directly into the portafilter on demand, with adjustable dose control and manual override.
  • Thermocoil heating with PID control: Delivers water at exactly 93°C for every extraction, with precise digital temperature monitoring ensuring consistent flavour shot after shot.
  • 9-bar extraction with pre-infusion: Low pressure pre-infusion gently expands the coffee bed before full 9-bar pressure builds via a 15-bar Italian pump, producing rich crema and complex flavour.
  • Pressure gauge: Displays extraction pressure in real time, giving you immediate feedback on whether your grind size and dose are producing the right conditions for a good shot.
  • Dosing Funnel attachment: Fits onto the portafilter to keep ground coffee contained during dosing and tamping, reducing waste and mess on the counter.

What Customers Ask About This Product

How does this compare to the Barista Pro?

The core capability is similar: both have an integrated grinder and a manual steam wand. The Barista Pro has 30 grind settings to the Barista Express's 16, uses the faster ThermoJet heating system, and has an LCD display. The Barista Express has a pressure gauge which the Pro lacks, giving you direct extraction feedback as you learn. The Barista Express is typically priced lower, making it a strong choice if you want the integrated grinder experience without paying for the Pro's refinements.

How does this differ from the Bambino Plus?

The Bambino Plus has automatic milk texturing and no integrated grinder, so you need to buy a grinder separately but the milk side is done for you. The Barista Express is the opposite: the grinder is built in, but you texture the milk manually. If you want everything in one machine and are happy to learn steaming, the Barista Express makes more sense. If the milk texturing is the part you find daunting, the Bambino Plus with a separate grinder is worth considering.

Is this suitable for a beginner to espresso?

Yes, though it rewards patience more than a fully automatic machine would. The integrated grinder removes one major variable, the BILT app guides you through setup interactively, and the pressure gauge shows you in real time whether your extraction is in the right range. There is a learning curve around grind size and milk texturing, but most customers are making coffee they are genuinely pleased with within a couple of weeks.

What does the pressure gauge actually tell me?

It shows the pressure your machine is building during extraction. The ideal range for espresso is around 9 bar. If your pressure is too low your shot may be weak or watery, usually meaning you need a finer grind. If it is too high the shot may taste bitter or over-extracted, usually meaning you need to grind coarser. It makes the process of dialling in your grind size considerably less guesswork.

In our experience...

This is the machine that teaches you espresso properly. It handles temperature and pressure precisely, but leaves grind size, dose, and milk texture in your hands. Customers who put the time into learning those variables tell us it changed the way they think about coffee entirely.

The pressure gauge is more useful than it looks. Most home espresso machines give you no feedback on what is happening during extraction. The gauge tells you immediately whether your grind and dose are producing the right conditions. It shortens the learning curve significantly.

Sixteen grind settings is enough to work with. It is fewer than the Barista Pro's thirty, but in practice most people find their preferred grind range and make small adjustments within it. Customers who upgrade from the Barista Express to the Pro often say the grind settings were not the reason.

The Dosing Funnel is one of those small things that makes a real difference. Grinding directly into a portafilter without one tends to scatter coffee grounds across the counter. The funnel keeps everything contained and reduces waste. It sounds like a minor detail until you use it every morning.

Manual steaming is a skill worth developing. It takes longer to learn than the automatic wand on the Bambino Plus, but customers who master it consistently say the results feel more satisfying. If you find yourself struggling in the early weeks, come in and we can show you the technique in person.

Care & Use Instructions

Before first use: Remove all packaging. Install the water filter in the holder and place it in the water tank. Fill the tank with fresh water and run several blank shots through the group head to flush the system. Run the grinder briefly to clear any residue from manufacture.

Daily maintenance: After steaming milk, purge the steam wand briefly and wipe immediately with a damp cloth. Rinse the portafilter and filter basket after each use. Empty the grounds container and drip tray regularly. The Dosing Funnel is dishwasher safe.

Weekly cleaning: Remove and wash the drip tray, water tank, and milk jug. Use the cleaning brush to clear the group head and grinder chute of any retained coffee. Wipe down all exterior surfaces with a damp cloth.

Regular backflushing: Use the cleaning disc and a cleaning tablet to backflush the group head periodically. This clears built-up coffee oils from the internal pathways and keeps extraction clean and consistent.

Descaling and filter replacement: Replace the water filter every 2 to 3 months depending on usage and water hardness. If you notice a change in extraction quality or machine performance, run the descaling programme according to the instruction manual.

For best results: Use fresh quality beans stored in an airtight container. Use the pressure gauge to guide your grind adjustments: aim for the needle to sit in the espresso range during extraction. A 25 to 30 second shot time is a good target. Purge the group head briefly before locking in the portafilter.

Rest of the World

If your country is not listed — including the USA, Australia, and other destinations — this is most likely because couriers charge by volumetric weight: a combination of package size and weight that makes standard online rates impractical to calculate automatically.

Please call us on 01737 222996 with the details of your order. We will advise on shipping costs within 24 hours and ask whether you would like to proceed.

Before you order internationally, please note:

All overseas shipments are at your own risk. We recommend taking out appropriate transit insurance to cover any damage in transit.
