The Smeg KLF05 is a compact 0.8-litre kettle built for smaller households or anyone who regularly boils only one to three cups at a time. The double-walled construction uses an inner stainless steel wall to retain heat longer after boiling whilst keeping the outer surface cool to the touch, which makes it safer to handle and more comfortable to use on a busy worktop. At 200mm tall and 200mm wide it takes up noticeably less counter space than a full-size kettle, and the 360-degree swivel base works equally well for left and right-handed use. The lid opens manually to 80 degrees for easy filling, and the kettle will not switch on if there is insufficient water or if the body is removed from the base. Available in five colours.
- Double-walled stainless steel construction: The inner stainless steel wall retains heat longer after boiling whilst the outer wall stays cool to the touch, making the kettle safer to handle and more comfortable to use straight after boiling.
- Compact 0.8-litre capacity: Sized for one to three cups, the smaller capacity reduces water wastage compared to filling a full-size kettle for a single drink, and the 200mm footprint takes up less worktop space.
- Auto switch-off at 100 degrees C: The kettle switches off automatically when it reaches boiling point and will not operate if there is insufficient water or if the body is detached from the base, adding a layer of safety in everyday use.
- 80-degree manually opening lid: The lid is designed to open at 80 degrees, giving enough clearance for easy filling without flipping back fully, and returns to a secure closed position for boiling.
- 360-degree swivel base with non-slip feet: The kettle slots onto the base in any orientation, making it equally comfortable for left and right-handed users, with non-slip feet keeping the base stable on the worktop.
What Customers Ask About This Product
How does this compare to the full-size Smeg KLF03 kettle?
The KLF05 has a smaller 0.8-litre capacity against the KLF03's 1.7 litres, making it better suited to one to three cups rather than larger batches. It runs at 1400W rather than 3000W, so it boils slightly more slowly, and the double-walled construction is a feature the KLF03 does not share. It is also smaller overall at 200mm tall versus 248mm, which can be a deciding factor for compact kitchens. Both boil to 100 degrees C only, with no variable temperature settings.
Does the outer surface get hot during use?
The double-walled construction is specifically designed to keep the outer wall cool to the touch during and after boiling. The inner stainless steel wall retains the heat whilst insulating the exterior, so it is considerably safer to handle than a single-walled kettle.
Is there a minimum fill level?
Yes. The kettle will not switch on if there is insufficient water in the body. The water level indicator on the side shows the minimum and maximum fill marks, and filling to at least the minimum line before use is required for the kettle to operate safely.
In our experience...
Boiling only what you need is a more significant habit than it sounds. Most full-size kettles are filled well beyond what is needed for a single drink, and the excess water is often boiled again later. An 0.8-litre kettle makes it practical to fill accurately for one to three cups each time, which reduces both energy use and the time spent waiting.
Double-walled kettles feel different in use compared to standard ones. The outside stays noticeably cooler than a single-walled kettle, which can feel slightly counterintuitive at first. It is not insulated to the level of a vacuum flask, but the difference in exterior temperature is genuine and makes it more comfortable to move or pour from immediately after boiling.
1400W is slower to boil than 3000W, but the difference is modest at this capacity. A full-size kettle at 3000W boils faster in absolute terms, but it is also boiling more water. At 0.8 litres, 1400W reaches boiling point in a reasonable time, and the smaller volume means the wait is not noticeably longer for a single cup than using a more powerful kettle filled to capacity.
The compact footprint matters more in small kitchens than the spec sheet suggests. At 200mm square, the KLF05 occupies roughly half the counter space of a full-size jug kettle. In a galley kitchen or on a crowded worktop, that difference is meaningful in practice and is one of the primary reasons people choose a mini kettle over a standard one.
The Smeg aesthetic carries through at this size without compromise. The KLF05 has the same retro silhouette and finish quality as the larger Smeg kettles. If the reason for choosing Smeg is partly visual, the mini version does not feel like a scaled-down compromise. It reads as a considered small appliance in its own right.

Care & Use Instructions
Limescale filter: Remove the stainless steel filter regularly and rinse under running water. In hard water areas, clean more frequently. For heavier deposits, soak briefly in a citric acid or descaler solution before rinsing.
Descaling: Descale periodically using a proprietary kettle descaler or citric acid solution. Fill to the minimum level, run the solution, then rinse thoroughly before use. Avoid vinegar, which can leave a residual taste.
Exterior cleaning: Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth. The outer wall stays cool during use but should still be wiped when cold. A soft dry cloth removes fingerprints and water marks from gloss finishes without scratching.
What to avoid: Do not immerse the base station in water. Do not operate without sufficient water in the body. Do not fill above the maximum 0.8-litre level.
