Quick Overview: Grunwerg's large 48 x 36cm bamboo carving board with removable stainless-steel spikes provides the space and stability needed for carving substantial roasts, whole chickens, and turkeys with confidence.

Grunwerg Large Bamboo Carving Board: For Serious Roasts

When you're preparing a substantial roast for family gatherings or entertaining, you need a board that provides both ample space and genuine stability. This deluxe heavyweight carving board from Grunwerg measures a generous 48 x 36cm, giving you comfortable room to manoeuvre around large joints whilst the removable stainless-steel spikes hold everything securely in place.

The board's thoughtful design addresses the practical challenges of carving large cuts:

  • Removable stainless-steel spike ring holds substantial joints, whole chickens, and turkeys firmly whilst you carve, then stores safely on the underside
  • 3.4kg heavyweight construction provides exceptional stability when carving larger cuts that require more pressure
  • Channelled grooves and reservoir collect generous amounts of meat juices for making flavourful gravy
  • Non-slip feet keep the board secure on worktops and tables whilst protecting surfaces from scratches
  • Integrated handles on the underside make lifting and transportation manageable despite the board's substantial size
  • Natural antimicrobial bamboo is harder than most traditional woods whilst remaining knife-friendly and sustainable

At 48 x 36cm, this board accommodates whole turkeys up to medium size, large rib roasts, leg of lamb, substantial BBQ cuts, and anything requiring generous carving space. When the spikes are removed, the large surface area is equally valuable for batch food preparation and general kitchen work.

Suitable for serious home cooks who regularly prepare large roasts, families who entertain frequently, BBQ enthusiasts tackling substantial cuts, and anyone who values having proper space and stability when carving.

What Customers Ask About Grunwerg Large Carving Board

How do the spikes work and can they be removed?

The stainless-steel ring with spikes can be positioned on top of the board to hold meat firmly during carving, providing stability and safety. When not in use, the spike ring can be removed and stored safely on the underside of the board, making it versatile for both carving and general food preparation.

What size joints can this large board accommodate?

At 48 x 36cm, this board is designed for large roasting joints (4-6kg), whole chickens, turkeys up to medium size, leg of lamb, rib roasts, and substantial BBQ cuts. It's significantly larger than the 40cm version, providing ample space for generous cuts and comfortable carving.

How does this compare to the smaller 40cm version?

This 48 x 36cm version is 20% larger in surface area and twice the weight (3.4kg vs 1.7kg), making it more stable for large joints. Choose this size for whole turkeys, large rib roasts, or if you regularly cook for 6+ people. The smaller 40cm version suits everyday roasts and smaller households.

Can I use this for tableside carving at formal dinners?

Yes, the natural bamboo finish is attractive enough for tableside presentation when serving Sunday roasts or special occasions. The handles make it easy to transport from kitchen to table, and the non-slip feet prevent scratching of dining surfaces.

How do the juice grooves work for making gravy?

The board features channelled grooves around the edges and a reservoir that collects meat juices as you carve. These juices can be decanted from the board to make gravy or used to baste the meat, reducing waste and enhancing flavour.

Is bamboo better than traditional wood for carving boards?

Bamboo is naturally harder than most woods whilst remaining knife-friendly, and it's more sustainable as it grows rapidly. It's also naturally antimicrobial and less prone to warping than traditional hardwoods. However, bamboo requires hand washing - it's not dishwasher safe.

Can I put this in the dishwasher?

No, this board should be washed with warm soapy water only. Dishwashers can damage bamboo, causing it to crack, warp, or lose its finish. Hand washing and occasional oiling will keep the board in excellent condition for years.

Is this board too heavy to lift comfortably?

At 3.4kg, the board is substantial but manageable. The integrated handles on the underside make lifting and transportation straightforward, and the weight actually provides beneficial stability when carving large joints that require more pressure.

How do I maintain bamboo to prevent it splitting?

Wash with warm soapy water and dry immediately after each use. Never soak or leave wet. Apply food-safe mineral oil or bamboo oil every few months to keep the fibres conditioned and prevent cracking. Store in a dry place away from direct heat sources.

Care & Use Instructions

Before First Use: Wash the board and spike ring with warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and dry immediately. Apply a thin coat of food-safe mineral oil or bamboo oil to condition the wood.

Daily Use: For carving, position the spike ring on top of the board and press your meat onto the spikes to secure it. The board's size and weight provide excellent stability for larger cuts. When using for general food preparation, remove the spikes and store them on the underside.

After Use: Wash with warm soapy water immediately after use. Given the board's size, you may find it easier to wash using the handles to support it over the sink. Never soak the board or leave it wet. Dry thoroughly with a cloth, then stand upright to air dry completely before storing.

Regular Maintenance: Apply food-safe mineral oil or bamboo conditioning oil every 4-6 weeks, or whenever the wood appears dry. This prevents cracking and maintains the natural finish. Given the large surface area, use a soft cloth to apply oil evenly across the entire board.

Avoid: Dishwashers, prolonged soaking, direct heat sources, harsh chemical cleaners, and storing whilst damp. These can cause warping, cracking, or splitting.

Storage: Store in a dry place with good air circulation. The board can be stored horizontally or upright. Ensure the spike ring is secured on the underside when not in use. Given its size, you may prefer dedicated storage space rather than stacking with other items.
