Quick Overview: Ultra-compact black coffee specialist at 23cm width with AromaG3 grinder and Pulse Extraction Process. Prepares exceptional espresso and coffee in single or double servings with one-button simplicity.

Jura ENA 4 Compact Automatic Coffee Machine

The Jura ENA 4 embodies a clear philosophy: exceptional black coffee in the most compact format possible. At just 23cm wide and 9.5kg, this is Jura's entry point for those who drink black coffee exclusively and need minimal worktop footprint. The machine focuses entirely on what it does - espresso and coffee in single or double servings - and does it exceptionally well through Swiss engineering and quality components.

The AromaG3 Professional Grinder delivers fast grinding whilst preserving bean aromas, grinding fresh for each cup rather than using pre-ground coffee or capsules. The intelligent Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.) optimises extraction time specifically for short specialities like espresso, opening up new dimensions in aroma and flavour complexity. This represents genuine engineering focus on extraction quality, not marketing claims.

Operation is deliberately simple: LED text display with buttons, three preselectable aroma levels (strength settings), and the option to use ground coffee for decaffeinated beans. One button press initiates the grinding, brewing, and dispensing sequence. The 1.1-litre water tank and 125g bean hopper provide capacity for 1-5 cups daily - appropriate sizing for individuals or couples who drink black coffee moderately. The Metropolitan Black finish suits minimalist kitchen aesthetics.

Key features:

  • Black coffee specialist: Focuses exclusively on espresso and coffee without milk system complexity
  • Ultra-compact design: 23cm width fits in minimal spaces, lightest Jura automatic at 9.5kg
  • AromaG3 Professional Grinder: Fast grinding with full aroma preservation, grinding fresh for each cup
  • Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.): Optimises extraction time for espresso, enhancing aroma and complexity
  • Simple LED operation: One-button simplicity with clear text display
  • Three aroma levels: Preselectable strength settings for personal preference
  • Ground coffee option: Use pre-ground decaffeinated coffee when desired
  • Single or double servings: Espresso, Coffee, Espresso Doppio, Coffee Doppio
  • 1.1-litre water tank: Compact capacity for 1-5 cups daily
  • 125g bean hopper: Space-efficient sizing for regular use
  • Freshly ground philosophy: "Freshly ground, not capsuled" - whole beans for each cup
  • Metropolitan Black finish: Sleek appearance for modern kitchens

This machine suits black coffee purists who never drink milk-based specialities, individuals or couples with extremely limited worktop space, those seeking Jura quality at entry pricing, apartment dwellers, caravan owners, or anyone who values simplicity and space efficiency over drink variety. The 1-5 cups daily capacity reflects typical usage for solo drinkers or couples having 1-2 cups each daily.

What Customers Ask About Jura ENA 4

Why would I choose this over models with milk systems?

If you exclusively drink black coffee, the ENA 4 eliminates the cost, complexity, and maintenance of milk systems you'd never use. Milk system components add bulk, weight, and require daily cleaning even if unused. The ENA 4's focused approach means you're paying only for what you'll actually use, whilst benefiting from Jura's quality grinder and extraction technology. For black coffee drinkers, this represents better value than paying for unused milk functionality.

What does Pulse Extraction Process actually do for espresso?

P.E.P. modifies the extraction process specifically for short specialities like espresso by pulsing water through the ground coffee rather than continuous flow. This optimises contact time between water and coffee grounds, extracting more aromatic compounds and creating fuller flavour profiles. The result is noticeably richer, more complex espresso compared to standard extraction methods. This isn't subtle - P.E.P. makes a genuine difference to espresso quality.

Can I make americano or long black with this machine?

The ENA 4 prepares espresso and coffee at various programmable volumes. For americano-style drinks, you can programme longer coffee volumes or manually add hot water to espresso. The machine doesn't have a dedicated hot water spout like some models, so you'd need to use a kettle for adding water if you want traditional americano preparation. Most users simply programme their preferred coffee volume directly.

How does the ground coffee option work?

The ground coffee option allows you to bypass the bean hopper and use pre-ground coffee instead - particularly useful for decaffeinated coffee if you keep regular beans in the hopper. You add ground coffee to a designated chute, and the machine brews without activating the grinder. This enables switching between regular and decaf without emptying the bean hopper or buying decaf as whole beans.

Is 1-5 cups daily really the maximum?

The 1-5 cups daily rating reflects Jura's engineering assessment of optimal usage for component longevity and maintenance intervals. You can technically make more cups, but consistently exceeding this rating accelerates wear, increases maintenance frequency, and may reduce machine lifespan. If you regularly drink 6+ cups daily or have multiple household members consuming black coffee, consider models with higher capacity ratings like the E6 or E8.

What We've Learned About Black Coffee Machines Since 1972

In our 52 years helping customers select coffee equipment, we've observed a distinct category of black coffee purists who find milk-based drink options unnecessary complexity. The ENA 4 serves this group specifically - it's not a "lesser" machine but rather a purposely focused one. By eliminating milk system components, Jura reduces cost, simplifies maintenance, and creates an ultra-compact footprint impossible with milk functionality.

The Pulse Extraction Process represents genuine engineering substance rather than marketing terminology. We've tasted countless espressos from machines across price points, and P.E.P.-equipped Juras consistently deliver noticeably richer, more complex flavour profiles. The pulsed extraction creates different extraction dynamics compared to continuous-flow brewing, genuinely opening up aromatic compounds that continuous flow leaves behind.

The "freshly ground, not capsuled" philosophy matters enormously to coffee quality. Pre-ground coffee begins losing aromatic compounds within minutes of grinding due to oxidation. Capsule coffee, whilst convenient, contains pre-ground beans weeks or months old. The ENA 4's approach - grinding whole beans seconds before brewing - preserves volatile aromatics that define excellent coffee. This isn't elitism; it's chemistry.

We've learned that the 1-5 cups daily capacity rating isn't arbitrary marketing but reflects genuine engineering parameters. Customers who consistently exceed capacity ratings experience accelerated component wear, more frequent descaling requirements, and shorter service intervals. The ENA 4 is engineered for specific usage patterns - respecting these parameters ensures satisfaction and longevity.

Care & Use Instructions

Before first use: Remove all packaging and protective films. Rinse the 1.1-litre water tank and fill with fresh cold water. Fill the 125g bean hopper with fresh coffee beans - avoid oily or caramelised beans which can affect the grinder. The machine will guide you through initial setup including system priming. Follow the LED display instructions during first-time setup.

Daily use: Use fresh, cold water in the tank and replace daily even if not fully used. The AromaG3 grinder automatically grinds beans for each cup, grinding only the amount needed and preserving aromatic compounds. Select your desired drink using the simple button controls: espresso, coffee, or their doppio (double) versions. Choose from three preselectable aroma levels to adjust strength to your preference.

Using the Pulse Extraction Process: P.E.P. activates automatically for espresso and espresso doppio, optimising extraction without any manual intervention required. You simply press the button and the machine handles the sophisticated pulsed extraction sequence. This automatic optimisation is one reason the ENA 4 delivers espresso quality far beyond its entry pricing.

Ground coffee option: To use pre-ground coffee (for decaffeinated beans, for example), select the ground coffee function, add the appropriate amount of ground coffee to the designated chute, and select your drink. The machine brews without activating the grinder. This enables occasional decaf consumption without purchasing decaf as whole beans or emptying the regular bean hopper.

Programming cup volumes: The ENA 4 allows programming your preferred espresso and coffee volumes. Whilst brewing, hold the button until you achieve your desired volume, then release. The machine stores this setting for future drinks. This flexibility means you can customise whether you prefer ristretto-length espresso or lungo-length coffee.

Automatic maintenance programmes: The ENA 4 prompts you when cleaning or descaling is required through the LED display. Follow the displayed instructions and use Jura-approved cleaning tablets and descaling solution. Without a milk system, maintenance is significantly simpler than models with milk functionality - you're maintaining only the brewing system and grinder.

Water filter: Jura recommends using the Claris water filter to protect internal components from limescale buildup. Replace the filter as prompted by the machine. Using filtered water extends machine life and reduces descaling frequency, particularly important in hard water areas. The filter fits in the compact 1.1L tank.

Grinder care: The AromaG3 grinder requires minimal maintenance beyond using quality whole beans. Avoid oily, caramelised, or flavoured beans which can cause buildup or damage. Don't add beans whilst the grinder is operating. The grinder is designed for long service life with consistent performance when used with appropriate beans.

What to avoid: Don't use oily, caramelised, or flavoured beans. Don't ignore maintenance prompts. Don't use non-Jura cleaning products which may void warranty. Don't attempt to exceed the 1-5 cups daily capacity rating consistently. Don't leave the machine unused for extended periods with water in the tank or beans in the hopper.

Storage: If not using the machine for several days, empty the water tank and run a final rinse cycle. Store in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight. The compact size and light weight (9.5kg) make the ENA 4 easy to move or store if needed, though most customers keep it permanently positioned given the minimal footprint.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I've used it and don't like it?

Return it anyway. Our no quibble guarantee covers used items - if it doesn't do what you wanted, we'll refund you. This applies even after you've used the ENA 4 to prepare coffee. We've offered this guarantee since 1972 because customers shouldn't take risks when purchasing coffee equipment.

How does the Half-Price Replacement guarantee work?

Valid for 2 years from purchase date. If you accidentally damage the ENA 4, we'll replace it at half the current retail price with proof of purchase and evidence of damage. Photos are acceptable. This covers accidental damage beyond what manufacturer warranty provides.

How long does delivery take?

Jura coffee machines are sent using Standard Delivery only, which can take up to 7 working days but is usually 3-4 days. Saturday and next-day delivery options are not available for Jura machines. Standard delivery is free for orders over £49. You can also collect from our shops in Cobham or Reigate, or our warehouse in Redhill.

What's included with the ENA 4?

The ENA 4 includes the machine, 1.1L water tank, 125g bean hopper, drip tray, and initial setup accessories. You'll need to purchase coffee beans, and we recommend Jura cleaning tablets and descaling solution for maintenance. The Claris water filter is recommended but typically sold separately. Contact us to confirm what's included with current stock.

Should I buy this or the E6?

Choose the ENA 4 if you exclusively drink black coffee, need the absolute most compact footprint, and consume 1-5 cups daily. Choose the E6 if you want milk-based drinks (cappuccino, etc.), need 10-20 cup capacity, or want more drink variety. The E6 costs more but offers significantly more functionality. If you're certain you'll never want milk drinks, the ENA 4 provides excellent value. If there's any possibility of wanting cappuccino or flat white, invest in the E6.

Can I add a milk frother later?

The ENA 4 has no milk system connections or hot water spout for external frothers. If you might want milk-based drinks in future, purchase a model with integrated milk system initially (E6, E8, ENA 8) rather than trying to add functionality later. The ENA 4 is designed specifically and permanently for black coffee only.

How does this compare to capsule machines?

Capsule machines offer convenience but use pre-ground coffee weeks or months old, resulting in significantly reduced aroma and flavour. The ENA 4 grinds whole beans seconds before brewing, preserving volatile aromatics. Capsule ongoing costs typically exceed whole bean costs over time. The ENA 4 provides substantially better coffee quality whilst eliminating capsule waste. If you value coffee flavour over absolute convenience, the ENA 4 delivers far superior results.

Is this suitable for office use?

The 1-5 cups daily capacity suits individual office use or very small teams (2 people) who drink black coffee. For offices with 3+ regular coffee drinkers, the limited capacity will require very frequent refilling and may not withstand the usage intensity. Consider whether the compact size advantage outweighs capacity limitations for your specific office situation.

Can I use this in a caravan?

The compact 23cm width and light 9.5kg weight make the ENA 4 excellent for caravan use where space and weight matter enormously. Verify your electrical supply (requires 100-240V). The 1.1L tank suits limited water storage. Many caravan owners find the ENA 4 ideal for quality coffee whilst travelling, particularly black coffee drinkers who don't need milk system complexity.

How does Jura warranty work?

Jura machines come with manufacturer warranty (typically 2 years for home use - confirm details at time of purchase). This covers manufacturing defects and component failures under normal use. Our Half-Price Replacement guarantee provides additional protection beyond manufacturer warranty. Register your machine with Jura after purchase to activate warranty coverage.

The Jura Ena 4 has an integrated rinsing, cleaning and descaling system.
