Quick Overview: Ceramic mechanism mill suitable for salt or pepper with interchangeable knobs, available in 6 contemporary colours, sold unfilled.
Cole & Mason Kenton Mill 15cm
The Cole & Mason Kenton Mill offers genuine versatility in a compact 15cm design. Unlike cheaper mills that compromise on mechanism quality, the Kenton uses a ceramic grinding mechanism with a lifetime guarantee - the same technology found in Cole & Mason's premium range. This matters because ceramic is the only mechanism that works reliably for both salt and pepper.
The mill arrives unfilled, giving you complete control over what goes inside. Choose rock salt or coarse sea salt for everyday seasoning, or fill it with black, white, or mixed peppercorns. The included interchangeable knobs let you mark which seasoning you're using - practical if you own multiple Kenton mills. With six contemporary colour options (Rosemary, Turmeric, Sichuan Pepper, Sea Salt, Sage, Blue Salt), you can create a coordinated collection or mix colours for visual interest whilst maintaining the functional priority: a mechanism that will last decades.
Key features:
- Ceramic mechanism: Suitable for both salt and pepper with lifetime guarantee
- Six contemporary colours: Choose from Rosemary, Turmeric, Sichuan Pepper, Sea Salt, Sage, or Blue Salt
- Interchangeable knobs: Mark contents clearly or mix colours across multiple mills
- Sold unfilled: Choose your preferred salt or pepper variety
- Cole & Mason premium quality: Not the supermarket nylon mechanism - this is proper ceramic
- Rubberwood construction: Sustainable hardwood with durable matte finish
- Compact 15cm size: Comfortable in hand without dominating table space
- Adjustable grind: From fine to coarse settings
This mill is designed for cooks who want reliable grinding performance with the flexibility to switch between salt and pepper as their collection grows.
What Customers Ask About the Kenton Mill
Can I use this mill for both salt and pepper?
Yes. The ceramic mechanism works for both salt and pepper, making this a truly versatile mill. Ceramic is mandatory for salt (as it resists corrosion) and works excellently for pepper. The interchangeable knobs let you mark which seasoning you're using. If you want to switch from salt to pepper, clean the mill thoroughly between uses to avoid flavour transfer.
Why does this come with interchangeable knobs?
The interchangeable knobs serve two purposes: they let you clearly mark whether the mill contains salt or pepper, and they allow you to mix and match colours if you buy multiple Kenton mills. This visual distinction prevents confusion at the table and helps avoid accidentally using salt when you meant pepper, or vice versa.
Can I mix colours across multiple mills?
Yes. The interchangeable knobs are designed to work across the entire Kenton range. Buy mills in different colours (Rosemary, Turmeric, Sichuan Pepper, Sea Salt, Sage, Blue Salt) and swap knobs to create your own colour combinations. This lets you personalise your collection whilst maintaining clear identification of contents.
Why is the mill sold unfilled?
Selling mills unfilled gives you complete control over what goes inside. You can choose your preferred salt variety (rock salt, coarse sea salt) or pepper type (black, white, or mixed peppercorns). This also keeps the mill lighter for shipping and ensures your seasoning is fresh when you first use it.
Is this Cole & Mason's premium range or the supermarket version?
This is Cole & Mason's premium range. The ceramic mechanism with lifetime guarantee confirms this. The supermarket versions (distinctive red packaging) use inferior nylon mechanisms. The Kenton range uses quality ceramic that will last decades with proper care.
What types of salt work in this mill?
Use rock salt or coarse sea salt. The ceramic mechanism handles standard salt crystals effectively. Avoid light finishing salts like Maldon or Fleur de Sel - these are too friable for mills and should be sprinkled directly onto food by hand. Very wet sea salts may work but dry salt gives the most consistent results.
What types of pepper work in this mill?
Black, white and green peppercorns are ideal for mills due to their hardness. Pink peppercorns are very soft and when used alone will clog your mill because they don't crack. If you want to use pink peppercorns, make sure to mix them with harder varieties to prevent clogging.
How does ceramic compare to steel mechanisms?
Ceramic mechanisms are corrosion-proof (essential for salt), maintain sharpness up to 10 times longer than steel, and allow zero flavour transfer between salt and pepper. The trade-off is that ceramic is brittle and can crack if dropped on hard surfaces. For versatility and longevity, ceramic is excellent. For absolute peak pepper grinding performance, carbon steel (like Peugeot) has a slight edge, but cannot handle salt.
What's the difference between the Kenton colours?
The colours are purely aesthetic - all Kenton mills use identical ceramic mechanisms with lifetime guarantees. Choose based on your kitchen aesthetic: Rosemary (soft green), Turmeric (warm yellow), Sichuan Pepper (rust red), Sea Salt (cool blue-grey), Sage (muted green-grey), or Blue Salt (contemporary blue). The mechanism quality and performance are identical across all colours.

Care & Use Instructions
Before first use: Remove all packaging. Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly. The mill arrives unfilled - fill with your choice of coarse salt or peppercorns before use.
Filling the mill: Unscrew the top knob and remove the grinding mechanism. Fill with rock salt, coarse sea salt, or peppercorns (black, white, or mixed). Do not overfill - leave approximately 1cm space at the top. Replace the mechanism and tighten the knob.
Adjusting grind settings: Turn the adjustment knob to change from fine to coarse. Test with a quarter turn before using to check the current setting, as others may have adjusted it.
Daily care: Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth after use and dry thoroughly. Do not immerse in water or place in the dishwasher. The rubberwood body can be damaged by prolonged moisture exposure.
Storage: Store in a dry location away from direct steam or moisture. Never use the mill above steaming pots - steam causes salt to cake onto mechanisms and can damage the wooden body.
Switching seasonings: If changing from salt to pepper or vice versa, empty the mill completely, brush out any remaining crystals, wipe the mechanism clean, and ensure it's fully dry before refilling.
Avoid: Do not drop the mill on hard surfaces - ceramic mechanisms can crack. Do not use light finishing salts like Maldon or Fleur de Sel. Never use wet salt or steam the mill. Do not use above steaming pots.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I've used it and don't like it?
Return it anyway. Our no quibble guarantee covers used items - if it doesn't do what you wanted, we'll refund you. This applies even after you've filled and used the mill.
How does the Half-Price Replacement guarantee work?
Valid for 2 years from purchase date. If you accidentally break this item, we'll replace it at half price with proof of purchase and evidence of breakage. Photos of the damage are acceptable.
How long does delivery take?
Standard delivery to mainland UK addresses can take up to 7 working days, but is usually 3-4, and is free for orders over £49. Next day delivery may be available for £9.95 on orders placed before 1pm Monday to Thursday, depending on your location and our stock levels. You can also collect from our shops in Cobham or Reigate, or our warehouse in Redhill.
Can I claim on the lifetime mechanism guarantee if I bought from you?
Yes. We're an authorised Cole & Mason retailer, so the full manufacturer guarantee applies. The ceramic mechanism carries a lifetime guarantee, and the whole product has a 2 year warranty. You can claim through us or directly with Cole & Mason. Keep your receipt or order confirmation as proof of purchase.
Should I avoid using this mill above steaming pots?
Yes, absolutely. Steam causes salt to cake onto mechanisms, stopping them from working. Steam exposure can also damage the rubberwood body over time. Use the mill at the table or away from direct steam. For cooking, keep a separate container of salt near the hob.
