Quick Overview: Set of 2 vacuum stoppers work with wine pump to remove oxygen and preserve still wines for up to 5 days.

Le Creuset WA-138 Set of 2 Wine Stoppers

The Le Creuset WA-138 stoppers are designed to work with a vacuum wine pump to preserve opened bottles of still wine. Wine deteriorates when exposed to oxygen - this oxidation process causes wine to lose its aromas and develop flat or vinegary notes within 1-2 days. These vacuum stoppers address this by creating a seal that allows air to be pumped out of the bottle, significantly slowing oxidation.

The stoppers work by creating a flexible seal around the bottle opening. When used with a wine pump (such as the Le Creuset WA-126, sold separately), air is extracted from inside the bottle to create a partial vacuum. This reduces oxygen contact with the wine, extending its drinkable life to 3-5 days rather than overnight. The set of two allows you to preserve multiple opened bottles simultaneously.

Key features:

  • Set of 2 stoppers: Preserve multiple bottles at once or keep a spare
  • Vacuum-compatible design: Works with wine pumps to remove oxygen from bottles
  • Flexible plastic construction: Creates reliable seal whilst withstanding pump suction
  • Extends wine life: Preserves quality for 3-5 days versus 1-2 days with basic stoppers
  • Lightweight design: Easy to handle and store at just 0.02kg per stopper
  • Universal fit: Designed for standard still wine bottle openings

These stoppers are designed for wine enthusiasts who regularly have opened bottles and want a reliable, affordable preservation system for red, white, and rosé wines.

What Customers Ask About the WA-138 Wine Stoppers

Do I need to buy a wine pump separately?

Yes. These stoppers are designed to work with a vacuum wine pump (Le Creuset WA-126 or compatible models). The stoppers create the seal whilst the pump removes oxygen from the bottle. Without a pump, they function as basic stoppers but won't provide the vacuum preservation benefit that extends wine life.

How does vacuum preservation work?

Wine deteriorates when exposed to oxygen - this is what causes it to taste flat or vinegary after a day or two. Insert the stopper into your opened bottle, then use a wine pump to extract air from inside. This creates a partial vacuum that slows oxidation significantly. The vacuum seal can preserve wine quality for 3-5 days rather than the 1-2 days you'd get with a basic stopper.

Can I use these with sparkling wine?

No. Vacuum stoppers are designed for still wines (red, white, and rosé). Sparkling wines require pressure retention, not vacuum. Using a vacuum stopper on sparkling wine would actually remove the carbonation you're trying to preserve. For sparkling wines, you need a pressure stopper like the Le Creuset SW-101 or SW-106.

Why do I get two stoppers?

Having two stoppers allows you to preserve multiple opened bottles simultaneously - perhaps a red and a white, or two different wines you're comparing. It's also practical to have a spare if one is being cleaned or if you regularly have more than one bottle open.

Will these fit all wine bottles?

These stoppers are designed to fit standard wine bottles with typical opening diameters of approximately 18-19mm. This covers the vast majority of still wine bottles (red, white, rosé) from commercial producers. Very old bottles, some dessert wines, or unusual formats may have different dimensions.

How long does the vacuum seal last?

The vacuum seal typically maintains for 3-5 days when bottles are stored in the refrigerator. However, some air will gradually seep back in over time - this is normal for all vacuum wine preservation systems. If you notice the stopper has lifted slightly or moves easily after a few days, the vacuum has been lost and you should re-pump or consume the wine promptly.

Why use plastic rather than silicone or rubber?

The specific plastic formulation used provides the right balance of flexibility to create a seal and rigidity to withstand the pump's suction force. The material resists wine staining and doesn't absorb odours that could affect wine flavour. It's also easier to clean and maintain than some rubber alternatives.

Care & Use Instructions

Before first use: Rinse the stoppers under warm water and dry thoroughly. Check that they're flexible and free from manufacturing residue.

Using the stoppers: Insert the stopper firmly into the wine bottle opening - it should sit snugly in the bottle neck. Place your wine pump over the stopper and pump until you feel significant resistance (typically 10-15 pumps depending on bottle size and how much wine remains). The stopper should feel firmly seated when the vacuum is created. Store bottles upright in the refrigerator.

After each use: Rinse thoroughly under warm water to remove wine residue. Pay particular attention to the sealing edges where wine may collect. The stoppers must remain clean and supple to create an effective vacuum seal. Dry before storage.

Storage: Store in a dry location away from direct heat or sunlight, which could affect the plastic's flexibility over time.

Avoid: Do not use with sparkling wines - vacuum removal will eliminate carbonation. Do not stretch or deform the stoppers excessively, as this may affect their sealing ability. Hand wash only - dishwasher heat may warp the plastic.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I've used them and don't like them?

Return them anyway. Our no quibble guarantee covers used items - if they don't do what you wanted, we'll refund you. This applies even after you've used them on multiple bottles.

How does the Half-Price Replacement guarantee work?

Valid for 2 years from purchase date. If you accidentally break these items, we'll replace them at half price with proof of purchase and evidence of breakage. Photos of the damage are acceptable.

How long does delivery take?

Standard delivery to mainland UK addresses can take up to 7 working days, but is usually 3-4, and is free for orders over £49. Next day delivery may be available for £9.95 on orders placed before 1pm Monday to Thursday, depending on your location and our stock levels. You can also collect from our shops in Cobham or Reigate, or our warehouse in Redhill.

Do I need to refrigerate wine after using these stoppers?

Yes, refrigeration is recommended for maximum preservation. The vacuum seal slows oxidation, but cold temperature provides additional protection for wine quality. Both red and white wines benefit from refrigeration once opened - simply remove red wine 30-60 minutes before serving to bring it to the proper temperature.

How do I know if the vacuum seal is working?

After pumping, the stopper should feel firmly seated and resist light upward pressure. If you can easily lift or wiggle the stopper, the vacuum hasn't been created - try pumping again or check that the stopper is properly inserted. A working vacuum seal should hold the stopper noticeably tighter than it would sit without pumping.

If your country is not listed — including the USA, Australia, and other destinations — this is most likely because couriers charge by volumetric weight: a combination of package size and weight that makes standard online rates impractical to calculate automatically.
