Le Creuset 3-ply Stainless Steel Rectangular Roaster

The generous 5.5-litre capacity accommodates a medium to large chicken, small turkey, or substantial joint of meat, whilst the upright handles make lifting from oven to hob easy and safe. The roaster's hob compatibility means you can make gravy directly in the pan by deglazing with wine or stock after roasting, capturing all those flavourful meat juices.

What Customers Ask About Le Creuset 3-ply Roaster

Can I use this roaster on the hob as well as in the oven?

Yes, this roaster works on all hob types including induction, gas, electric, and ceramic glass, as well as in conventional ovens up to 260°C. This versatility allows you to make gravy directly in the roaster by placing it on the hob after roasting.

What is 3-ply construction and why does it matter?

3-ply construction means premium-grade stainless steel and aluminium are bonded together in three layers. The aluminium core conducts heat quickly and evenly, whilst the stainless steel provides durability and a non-reactive cooking surface. This combination delivers fast, even heat distribution throughout the entire roaster.

What size joint of meat will this roaster accommodate?

The roaster measures 35cm x 25cm internally with 7cm depth and 5.5-litre capacity. This is suitable for a medium to large chicken (up to approximately 2.5kg), a small turkey, or a joint of beef, pork, or lamb weighing up to 3kg. Measure your typical roasting needs to confirm suitability.

Is this roaster dishwasher safe?

Yes, the roaster is dishwasher safe. However, hand washing is recommended to maintain the stainless steel's appearance. If you notice discolouration or water marks from the dishwasher, these can be removed with stainless steel cleaner.

Can I use metal utensils in this roaster?

Yes, metal utensils can be used with care in stainless steel cookware. Avoid harsh scraping or knocking metal tools against the rim. Le Creuset recommends silicone, wooden, or heat-resistant plastic tools for best results.

Why does stainless steel sometimes develop rainbow marks or discolouration?

Rainbow marks or heat tint on stainless steel are caused by high heat and are cosmetic only—they don't affect performance. White marks are typically mineral deposits from water. Both can be removed with stainless steel cleaner, lemon juice, or vinegar.

Can I use this roaster for bain-marie cooking?

Yes, the roaster is suitable for bain-marie (water bath) cooking in the oven. The 3-ply construction distributes heat gently and evenly, making it ideal for custards, terrines, and other dishes requiring gentle, indirect heat.

Care & Use Instructions

Before first use: Remove all labels and packaging. Wash in warm, soapy water, then rinse and dry thoroughly. Condition the interior surface by rubbing vegetable or corn oil over the entire surface using a paper towel. Rinse with hot water and dry thoroughly. When frying for the first time, add vegetable or corn oil to cover the base, heat gently whilst rotating to coat the sides, remove from heat, allow to cool, then clean with paper towels.

Choosing the right heat level: Medium or low heat achieves best results, even for frying and searing. Allow the roaster to heat up gradually for even cooking. If higher heat is needed, reduce the setting once the desired temperature is reached. The 3-ply construction conducts heat efficiently, so high heat is rarely necessary.

Roasting technique: Place meat on a rack or shelf rather than directly on the oven floor, which can cause uncontrolled cooking. Always use oven gloves when handling hot roaster. Use an appropriately sized hob ring when transferring to the hob—this ensures even heating and prevents handle damage.

Making gravy on the hob: After roasting, carefully transfer the roaster to the hob. Remove excess fat if desired, add wine or stock to deglaze, and scrape up the flavourful browned bits. The stainless steel surface won't react with acidic ingredients like wine or tomatoes.

For induction cooking: Use an appropriately sized ring for best results. If the ring is too large, the hob may not recognise the roaster. Avoid using the 'boost' function—this should only be used for rapidly heating large volumes of water.

Using salt: Don't pour salt directly onto the stainless steel surface. To avoid pitting or marks, add salt to hot cooking liquid or food instead.

Under the grill: When using under the grill, maintain at least a 5cm (2 inch) gap between the heat source and the top of the roaster.

Daily cleaning: Allow the roaster to cool for a few minutes before cleaning. Never plunge hot stainless steel into cold water—excessive temperature changes can damage the pan. Wash in warm soapy water with a non-abrasive sponge or cloth. For stuck-on food, soak in hot soapy water before cleaning. The roaster is dishwasher safe, though hand washing maintains the stainless steel's appearance better.

Removing discolouration: Rainbow marks (heat tint) or white marks (mineral deposits) are cosmetic only. Remove with stainless steel cleaner or a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water. Rub gently, rinse thoroughly, and dry.

Recommended tools: Le Creuset recommends silicone, wooden, or heat-resistant plastic tools. Metal utensils can be used with care—avoid harsh scraping or knocking against the rim. Don't use hand-held electric beaters, knives, or sharp implements that might scratch the surface.

Important operational notes:

  • The 3-ply construction heats quickly—medium heat is usually sufficient
  • Don't leave the roaster unattended when preheating
  • Avoid extreme temperature changes which can warp stainless steel
  • Don't place directly on oven floor—use a shelf or rack
  • The upright handles stay relatively cool but always use oven gloves
  • Can be used for fat-free cooking—preheat on medium for 2 minutes before adding food

Storage: The roaster is freezer safe for meal prep and storage. Ensure it's completely dry before storing to prevent water marks. Stack carefully with protection between pans if storing multiple pieces.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I've used it and don't like it?

Return it anyway. Our no quibble guarantee covers used items - if it doesn't do what you wanted, we'll refund you. This applies even after you've used it.

How does the Half-Price Replacement guarantee work?

Valid for 2 years from purchase date. If you accidentally break this item, we'll replace it at half price with proof of purchase and evidence of breakage. Photos of the damage are acceptable.

Does the Le Creuset Lifetime Guarantee cover accidental damage?

The manufacturer's lifetime guarantee covers defects in materials and workmanship. Our own Half-Price Accidental Damage Replacement covers breakage from drops or accidents for the first 2 years. Contact us to determine which guarantee applies to your situation.

Can I use this under the grill?

Yes, the roaster is suitable for use under the grill. Always maintain at least a 5cm (2 inch) gap between the heat source and the top of the roaster. The upright handles make it easier to position safely.

Do I need to season this roaster like cast iron?

No, stainless steel cookware doesn't require seasoning. Food will stick more if a patina builds so make sure to clean thoroughly after each use.

Will this roaster work on my induction hob?

Yes, the 3-ply stainless steel construction is fully compatible with induction hobs. Use an appropriately sized ring for best results—if the ring is too large, the hob may not recognise the roaster. Avoid using the 'boost' function except for rapid water heating.

How does 3-ply compare to single-layer stainless steel?

Single-layer stainless steel is a poor heat conductor and creates hot spots. 3-ply construction bonds aluminium (excellent conductor) between stainless steel layers, combining even heating with stainless steel's durability and non-reactive surface. The difference in cooking performance is significant.

Can I use this for poaching fish or chicken?

Yes, the roaster works excellently for poaching. The even heat distribution prevents scorching, and the generous surface area accommodates multiple portions. The hob compatibility means you can bring poaching liquid to temperature on the hob before transferring to the oven.

Will potatoes or vegetables roasted in this brown properly?

Yes, the 3-ply construction ensures even heat distribution for proper browning. Preheat the roaster with oil before adding vegetables for best results. The stainless steel surface develops excellent caramelisation.

Can I use this for baking as well as roasting?

Yes, the roaster is suitable for baking applications like gratins, lasagne, or brownies. The 260°C oven safety covers most baking temperatures. The even heat distribution ensures consistent results.

How do I prevent food from sticking?

Preheat the roaster properly, use adequate fat or oil, and avoid moving food too early—let it develop a crust before turning. If food does stick, deglaze with liquid whilst hot to release browned bits.

Is the roaster suitable for acidic foods like tomatoes?

Yes, stainless steel is non-reactive, meaning it won't react with acidic ingredients like tomatoes, wine, vinegar, or citrus. This makes it ideal for making gravies, sauces, and dishes containing acidic components.
