An adjustable neck strap makes a bigger difference than it sounds. A fixed-length neck strap positions the apron at one height, which works well for some people and sits awkwardly for others. An adjustable strap lets you bring the apron up or down so the pocket and body coverage are actually where they need to be.

Cotton aprons breathe better than synthetic alternatives. A kitchen gets warm, particularly when the oven is on and multiple hobs are in use. A cotton apron allows more airflow than polyester or mixed-fibre alternatives, which makes a noticeable difference over a long cooking session.

Apron length matters for genuine protection. A shorter apron protects the chest and stomach but leaves the thighs and lap exposed when you sit down or bend forward. At 80cm long, this apron provides coverage further down the body, which is more useful when dealing with spills or splashes from lower surfaces.

The front pocket is more useful than it first appears. Beyond obvious things like a cloth or a spoon, an apron pocket is a practical place for a timer, a thermometer probe, or a folded recipe. Washing an apron at 40°C is enough for most kitchen use. For general cooking use, 40°C cleans cotton effectively without putting unnecessary wear on the fabric or fading the colour over time. If the apron has been used when handling raw meat, a slightly hotter wash is worth considering.
