Microplane Garlic Cutter Black
The Microplane Garlic Cutter is a compact, self-contained kitchen tool designed to cut garlic quickly, cleanly, and without the mess or lingering smell of a chopping board. Peeled cloves sit inside the transparent container, and a simple back-and-forth sliding motion draws them across the photo-etched stainless steel blade — made in the USA to Microplane's precision standard.
- Photo-etched US blade: Cuts rather than crushes, which the manufacturer states helps preserve the garlic's natural oils and flavour
- Holds 2–3 cloves: Process several cloves at once without stopping to reload
- Built-in scraper: Located inside the lid, it sweeps cut garlic cleanly into your dish
- Hands stay odour-free: Minimal contact with the garlic throughout the process
- Compact dimensions: At 7.8cm x 9.1cm x 4cm, it fits easily in a kitchen drawer
- Easy to clean: Rinse under running water or place in the dishwasher
The black casing with stainless steel finish and transparent container gives the cutter a neat, considered appearance that suits a tidy kitchen. It's a practical tool for anyone who uses garlic regularly and wants to skip the chopping board altogether.
What Customers Ask About the Microplane Garlic Cutter
How does it actually cut the garlic?
Place one or more peeled cloves into the transparent container, then slide the lid back and forth. The photo-etched blade on the underside of the lid cuts the garlic into small, uniform pieces. The built-in scraper on the lid's interior then helps transfer the cut garlic directly to your pan or dish.
Why does cutting matter more than crushing?
A garlic press crushes cloves aggressively, which can alter the flavour and release more of the pungent compounds quickly. The Microplane's blade cuts cleanly and precisely — the manufacturer states this helps preserve the garlic's natural oils and flavour, allowing them to develop properly during cooking.
Will it really keep my hands smell-free?
Because the garlic stays enclosed within the container throughout the cutting process, direct contact with your hands is minimal. This significantly reduces — though may not entirely eliminate — odour transfer compared with chopping or pressing by hand.
How many cloves can I cut at once?
The container is sized to accommodate 2–3 peeled garlic cloves at a time. For larger quantities, simply reload and repeat — the process is quick enough that this is rarely inconvenient.
Is it genuinely dishwasher safe?
Yes, the manufacturer confirms it is dishwasher safe. That said, as with most precision cutting tools, hand washing with warm water and mild detergent is the gentler option and is likely to extend the blade's working life.
How does it compare to a standard garlic press?
A press is faster for very small quantities but crushes the garlic, produces waste (the papery residue left in the press), and is typically harder to clean. The Microplane cutter contains the garlic throughout, produces no waste, is easy to rinse, and cuts rather than crushes — a meaningful difference if flavour preservation matters to you.

Care & Use Instructions
Daily cleaning: Rinse under running water immediately after use and allow to drip dry. This is usually sufficient for routine cleaning.
Dishwasher: The cutter is dishwasher safe, though hand washing is recommended where possible to preserve blade quality over time.
Using the scraper: After cutting, open the lid and use the built-in scraper on its inner surface to transfer garlic cleanly into your dish — this avoids waste and keeps the blade clear.
Storage: The compact dimensions make it straightforward to store in a drawer. Ensure it is fully dry before storing to avoid any moisture build-up around the blade.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if I've used it and don't like it?
Return it anyway. Our no quibble guarantee covers used items – if it doesn't perform as you hoped, we'll refund you. This applies even after you've used it in your kitchen.
How does the Half-Price Replacement guarantee work?
Valid for 2 years from purchase date. If you accidentally break this item, we'll replace it at half price with proof of purchase and evidence of the damage. Photos of the breakage are acceptable.
How long does delivery take?
Standard delivery to mainland UK addresses can take up to 7 working days, but is usually 3–4, and is free for orders over £49. Next day delivery may be available for £9.95 on orders placed before 1pm Monday to Thursday, depending on your location and our stock levels. You can also collect from our shops in Cobham or Reigate, or our warehouse in Redhill.
Can I use the cutter for ingredients other than garlic?
The cutter is designed and sized specifically for garlic cloves. We would not recommend using it for other ingredients, as the blade and container are optimised for that purpose.
The blade looks sharp – is it safe to handle during cleaning?
Take care when rinsing the blade directly. The simplest approach is to rinse the whole unit under running water without contacting the blade surface directly with your fingers. A soft brush can be useful if any garlic residue remains around the blade.
Does the scraper come out for separate cleaning?
The scraper is built into the inside of the lid rather than being a removable component. Rinsing the lid under running water should be sufficient to keep it clean after each use.
