Quick Overview: The Sage Luxe Brewer Thermal is a 12-cup filter coffee machine with SCA-certified brewing, cold brew, custom profiles, and a thermal carafe that keeps coffee hot for up to 4 hours.

The Luxe Brewer Thermal is a filter coffee machine that meets the SCA Golden Cup standard, a certification from the Specialty Coffee Association confirming that the machine brews at the correct temperature, flow rate, and contact time for optimal extraction. A one-touch Brew preset handles everything automatically, whilst custom settings let you adjust bloom volume, bloom time, brew temperature, and flow rate if you want more control. A cold brew preset brews at higher concentration for use over ice or in cocktails, ready in up to 30 minutes. The dual-wall thermal carafe keeps coffee above 65°C for up to 4 hours, and a programmable timer lets you set the machine to start up to 24 hours in advance. Both cone and flat bottom filter options are included, as research from UC Davis and the Coffee Science Foundation indicates that each filter shape brings out different flavour characteristics in the cup.

  • SCA Golden Cup certified brewing: Meets the Specialty Coffee Association's Golden Cup standard, confirming the machine brews at the correct temperature, flow rate, and contact time for optimal extraction.
  • Custom brew profiles: Adjust bloom volume, bloom time, brew temperature, and flow rate to fine-tune your brew, with the machine remembering your settings for next time.
  • Cold brew preset: Brews at higher concentration for cold brew, ready in up to 30 minutes depending on volume, for use over ice or as a base for coffee cocktails.
  • Dual-wall thermal carafe: Keeps coffee above 65°C for up to 4 hours without a hotplate, preserving flavour and temperature after brewing.
  • Cone and flat bottom filter options: Both filter basket inserts are included; cone filters emphasise fruity notes whilst flat bottom filters bring out floral, nutty, and chocolate flavours, according to research from UC Davis and the Coffee Science Foundation.

What Customers Ask About This Product

What does SCA Golden Cup certified actually mean?

The SCA Golden Cup standard is a set of brewing parameters defined by the Specialty Coffee Association, covering water temperature, brew ratio, contact time, and extraction yield. A machine certified to this standard brews within those parameters automatically, which means you get a consistently well-extracted cup without needing to calibrate anything yourself.

How does the cold brew preset work?

The cold brew preset brews at a higher concentration than a standard hot brew cycle, producing a strong base that works well over ice or diluted to taste. It takes up to 30 minutes depending on the volume of water used, which is considerably faster than traditional overnight cold brew methods. The result is intended as a concentrate rather than a ready-to-drink brew.

What is the difference between the cone and flat bottom filters?

According to research from UC Davis, the SCA, and the Coffee Science Foundation, the shape of the filter affects which flavour compounds are extracted. Cone filters tend to emphasise fruity flavour notes, whilst flat bottom filters bring out more floral, nutty, and chocolate characteristics. Both basket inserts are included so you can try both and decide which suits your preference and the coffee you're brewing.

Can I programme it to start automatically?

Yes. The programmable timer lets you set the machine to start brewing up to 24 hours in advance. You set the time, load the water and coffee, and the machine starts the brew cycle automatically so it's ready when you want it.

In our experience...

Brew temperature has a significant effect on flavour. Water that is too hot over-extracts coffee, producing bitterness. Water that is too cool under-extracts it, producing sourness and thin body. The SCA recommends brewing between 90 and 96°C. A machine certified to the Golden Cup standard maintains this range automatically, which is why the results are more consistent than brewing with a kettle and a manual method where temperature is harder to control.

Bloom time matters more than most people realise. Blooming means allowing a small amount of hot water to pre-wet the coffee grounds before the main brew begins, releasing CO2 trapped in freshly roasted beans. This allows water to extract more evenly during the main brew. Skipping the bloom, or using stale beans that have already off-gassed, produces a flatter, less complex cup.

A thermal carafe preserves flavour better than a hotplate. Keeping brewed coffee on a hotplate continues to cook it, which breaks down aromatic compounds and introduces bitterness over time. A thermal carafe retains heat without applying it, so coffee brewed an hour ago tastes closer to freshly brewed than it would from a hotplate machine.

Filter shape genuinely affects the cup. The shape of the filter basket changes how water flows through the coffee grounds. Cone filters direct water through the centre, producing a longer contact time and emphasising clarity and fruit notes. Flat bottom filters distribute water more evenly across a wider bed, producing a fuller, rounder extraction. Neither is objectively better; the right choice depends on the coffee and your preference.

Water quality affects filter coffee more than most brewing methods. Filter coffee is almost entirely water, so its mineral content directly influences extraction and taste. Very soft water under-extracts; very hard water over-extracts and leaves scale. The included Claro Swiss water filter and water hardness strip allow you to check and manage your water quality, which makes a more noticeable difference to filter coffee than to espresso.

Care & Use Instructions

Daily cleaning: Rinse the carafe, lid, and filter baskets after each use. Remove and discard used filter paper or rinse the mesh filter basket depending on which you have used. Wipe the brew head area with a damp cloth to remove coffee residue.

Water tank care: Remove and rinse the water tank regularly. The Claro Swiss water filter should be replaced as recommended, typically every 2 to 3 months depending on water hardness and usage. Use the included water hardness strip to monitor your water quality.

Thermal carafe care: Hand wash the thermal carafe and lid with warm soapy water. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the interior. Do not put the carafe in the dishwasher unless confirmed safe in the manual. Rinse thoroughly to remove any soap residue before use.

Descaling: Descale the machine periodically depending on your water hardness. If you are using the Claro Swiss water filter, scale build-up will be slower, but descaling is still recommended over time. Follow the descaling instructions in the manual.

Filter basket care: Rinse both the cone and flat bottom filter baskets after each use. The mesh flat bottom filter can be gently brushed to remove any trapped grounds. Allow to dry fully before storing.

Rest of the World

If your country is not listed — including the USA, Australia, and other destinations — this is most likely because couriers charge by volumetric weight: a combination of package size and weight that makes standard online rates impractical to calculate automatically.

Please call us on 01737 222996 with the details of your order. We will advise on shipping costs within 24 hours and ask whether you would like to proceed.

Before you order internationally, please note:

All overseas shipments are at your own risk. We recommend taking out appropriate transit insurance to cover any damage in transit.

Customs forms for all international packages declare the full value and a description of the contents. Any customs or import duties levied on arrival in your country are your responsibility. Your local customs office can provide further information.
