In our experience...
Yellowhammers are named for their bright yellow plumage. The yellowhammer is one of the UK's more colourful farmland birds, and its inclusion alongside familiar garden visitors like robins and great tits gives this design a broad range of colour and detail.
Garden bird illustration relies on close observation of real plumage. Painting recognisable species like great tits and finches accurately means capturing subtle differences in colour and pattern, which is part of why this kind of design takes a practised hand.
Bone china gets its name from its bone ash content. Fine bone china is made by adding bone ash to the clay mixture, which gives the finished piece a distinctive translucency and a lighter weight than standard ceramic of the same size.
A taller mug shape gives an illustrator more vertical space to work with. Shetland's tall, elegant profile suits a design with several different birds and plants, since there is more room to space them out than on a shorter, wider mug.
Pairing birds with insects and flowers reflects their natural setting. Showing a bird alongside the plants and insects found in the same garden situates the subject within its natural environment, rather than as an isolated portrait.
