Le Creuset BBQ Stainless Steel Basting Brush
The basting brush is one of those BBQ tools that quietly makes everything better. Apply too little marinade and the flavour stays in the bowl; apply it with a clumsy tool and it puddles rather than coats. The Le Creuset Basting Brush solves both problems with bristles precise enough to give you full control over every stroke, so sauces and glazes go exactly where you want them — whether that's a thin lacquer of teriyaki across a salmon fillet or a generous coat of sticky ribs glaze that needs working into every crevice.
The handle is premium stainless steel: rust-resistant, easy to wipe clean, and weighted for a comfortable grip during extended sessions at the grill. At 43.5cm long it keeps your hand well clear of direct heat, which matters when you're basting over high charcoal or a roaring gas burner. This is a tool that earns its place in the kit bag — at home beside the grill, in the hamper for a catered picnic, or as a gift for someone whose BBQ game you want to upgrade.
Key features:
- Precision bristles: Give you full control when applying marinades, glazes, oils, and sauces — coat evenly or work sauce into crevices with equal ease
- Rust-resistant stainless steel: Withstands repeated outdoor use, heat exposure, and washing without deteriorating
- Ergonomic handle: Comfortable grip for extended BBQ sessions, balanced weight reduces hand fatigue
- 43.5cm length: Keeps hands safely away from direct heat over charcoal or gas burners
- Versatile use: Marinades, glazes, oils, butter, barbecue sauce — anything liquid or semi-liquid you want on grilled food
- Elegant design: Le Creuset styling adds a touch of quality to outdoor entertaining kit
- Gift-ready: Makes an excellent addition to a BBQ enthusiast's kit or as part of a grilling gift set
- Le Creuset quality standards: Built to the same quality benchmarks as the wider Le Creuset range
Whether you're a weekend BBQ enthusiast or a more serious outdoor cook, a good basting brush makes a tangible difference to the end result. Marinades penetrate more evenly, glazes caramelise more uniformly, and the whole process feels more considered. This one is well-suited to both the occasion cook who wants quality kit, and anyone building a serious outdoor cooking collection.
What Customers Ask About the Le Creuset Basting Brush
Are the bristles silicone or natural — and does it matter?
The bristles are stainless steel wire rather than silicone or natural fibres. This matters for a few reasons: stainless steel bristles hold and release liquid very effectively, cope with high grill temperatures without melting, and don't absorb flavours between uses. Silicone bristles are softer and more flexible — useful for very delicate applications — but stainless steel gives you better control and durability in a high-heat BBQ context. If you're basting over direct flame or very high charcoal heat, stainless steel is the right choice.
Will the bristles fall out during use?
Quality stainless steel basting brushes like this one have the bristles securely bound at the ferrule (the metal collar where bristles meet handle). Unlike some cheaper brushes where bristles work loose over time, Le Creuset's construction standard ensures the binding holds under repeated use and washing. If you ever do find a loose bristle on your food — which should be rare with quality tools — simply remove it. The risk is significantly lower than with cheap brushes that shed bristles regularly.
Can I use this for buttering bread or pastry, not just BBQ?
Yes — a basting brush is a basting brush whatever it's applied to. The 43.5cm length is longer than a typical pastry brush, which makes it slightly unwieldy for precision work on small pastry pieces, but it's perfectly usable for buttering baked goods, applying egg wash, or glazing. If you bake regularly as well as BBQ, this works for both. The stainless steel construction means no flavour transfer between uses, provided you wash it properly between a marinade session and a butter application.
How does it handle thick sauces and honey glazes versus thin marinades?
The stainless steel bristles handle the full range well. For thin marinades and oils, the bristles pick up and deposit liquid efficiently without over-saturating the surface. For thicker glazes, barbecue sauce, or honey-based coatings, the bristles hold a generous amount and allow you to work the sauce in with some pressure — useful for ribs, drumsticks, or anything with texture to coat. Very thick, jammy glazes may need warming slightly to become more fluid before brushing, but that's true of any basting tool.
Is 43.5cm long enough to keep my hand away from the heat?
For most domestic BBQ setups — gas grills, kettle barbecues, kamado-style grills — 43.5cm provides comfortable clearance from direct heat during basting. You're not basting with your hand directly over the flame; the long handle means you can reach across the grill grate at an angle. In very high-heat situations (like a wok burner or wood-fired grill with dramatic flare-ups), extra caution is always sensible regardless of handle length. For normal charcoal and gas BBQ use, this length is well-judged.
Can I use this at high oven temperatures, not just outdoors?
Yes. Stainless steel handles high oven temperatures without issue — far higher than domestic ovens reach. This makes the brush equally useful for basting roasts, glazing hams, or applying butter to bread during baking. The same control and precision that works outdoors applies in the oven. For stovetop basting (like basting a steak in butter in a cast iron pan), the long handle is actually an advantage — you can tilt the pan and spoon-baste without your arm being directly over the heat.

Care & Use Instructions
Before first use: Wash the brush in warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly. This removes any manufacturing residue and ensures the bristles are clean before first contact with food. Dry completely before storing.
Using the brush: Dip the bristle end into your marinade, sauce, or oil and apply to the food surface using smooth, even strokes. For thin liquids, a light touch works best — the bristles hold sufficient liquid to coat evenly without flooding the surface. For thicker glazes, apply with slightly more pressure to work the sauce into any textured surface (bone edges on ribs, skin folds on drumsticks, scored fat on pork). Reapply as often as your recipe requires — during the last few minutes of cooking is typical for caramelising glazes.
During cooking: Keep the brush clean between applications if switching between different sauces. Set it on a plate or brush rest rather than directly on the grill grate, which can cause sauce residue to burn and taint subsequent applications. If the handle gets wet with sauce, wipe it with a cloth — a dry grip gives more control.
Cleaning after use: Wash in warm water with washing-up liquid immediately after use, before sauce or marinade has dried and hardened in the bristles. Work the bristles against your palm or a soft brush to dislodge any residue caught between them. Rinse thoroughly under running water. The stainless steel construction is dishwasher safe — the top rack is fine for both the handle and bristle head. Ensure the brush is completely dry before storing to prevent any moisture being trapped at the ferrule.
Removing stubborn residue: If sticky glaze or caramelised sauce has dried in the bristles, soak the bristle end in warm soapy water for 10-15 minutes before washing. This softens most residues without requiring aggressive scrubbing that could bend or splay the bristles. For very stubborn honey or sugar-based glazes, a brief soak in hot water is usually sufficient.
Storage: Store hanging or upright with the bristles pointing up — this prevents the bristles from being compressed against a surface and losing their shape. Many Le Creuset BBQ tools have hanging loops for this purpose; if yours does, use it. Store in a dry location. Avoid leaving the brush resting in a bowl of marinade for extended periods, which can loosen the ferrule binding over time.
What to avoid: Don't use the brush to stir acidic marinades in metal bowls for extended periods — brief dipping and applying is fine. Avoid bending the bristles sideways under heavy pressure, which can permanently splay them and reduce precision. Don't use as a scrubbing tool for cleaning the grill grate — the bristles aren't designed for abrasive work and you'll damage them.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if I've used it and don't like it?
Return it anyway. Our no quibble guarantee covers used items — if it doesn't perform the way you expected, we'll refund you. We've offered this guarantee since 1972 because we believe quality tools should earn their place in your kit, not just look good in the box.
How does the Half-Price Replacement guarantee work?
Valid for 2 years from purchase date. If you accidentally damage the brush — say the handle bends or the ferrule is damaged — we'll replace it at half the current retail price with proof of purchase and evidence of damage. Photos are acceptable.
How long does delivery take?
Standard delivery to mainland UK addresses can take up to 7 working days, but is usually 3-4, and is free for orders over £49. Next day delivery may be available for £9.95 on orders placed before 1pm Monday to Thursday, depending on your location and stock levels. You can also collect from our shops in Cobham or Reigate, or our warehouse in Redhill.
Is this dishwasher safe?
Yes. Stainless steel handles dishwasher conditions without rusting or corroding. Top rack is recommended to avoid the most intense heat zones, though the material itself will cope. Washing by hand immediately after use is the quickest option and keeps the bristles in best condition longest.
Can I buy this as part of a Le Creuset BBQ gift set?
We stock a range of Le Creuset BBQ accessories. Contact us or browse the Le Creuset BBQ section on site — we can often put together a selection of tools as a gift purchase. Call us on 01737 222996 or visit either shop and we'll help you put something together.
Is this suitable for use with a smoker as well as a standard BBQ?
Yes. The 43.5cm handle length suits smoker use particularly well — smoker chambers often require reaching in to baste, and a longer handle keeps your hand and arm away from the smoke and heat. The stainless steel construction handles the humid, smoky environment of a smoker without any issues. Many smoker cooks apply sauce or glaze in the final stages of a long smoke — this brush is well suited to that.
Are there other colours or styles available?
The Le Creuset BBQ range is updated periodically. Contact us for current availability of other BBQ tools and accessories, or browse the Le Creuset section on site.
