What Customers Ask About the ETI DOT Thermometer

What's the difference between the DOT and more expensive thermometers like Meater Pro?

The DOT is a wired thermometer with a physical probe connected to the display unit via a 1.2m lead. This design offers simplicity, reliability, and affordability—no Bluetooth connectivity, no app requirements, no charging needed. The Meater Pro is wireless with advanced features like multiple sensors and smartphone connectivity, but costs significantly more. The DOT suits cooks who want straightforward temperature monitoring without technology complexity. If you need wireless freedom or extreme heat resistance beyond 300°C, consider the Meater Pro. For reliable, simple monitoring, the DOT delivers excellent value.

Can I leave the probe in the oven throughout cooking?

Yes, the probe is specifically designed as a leave-in thermometer. The 114mm probe and stainless steel braided lead withstand temperatures up to 300°C, whilst the display unit remains safely outside the oven. This allows continuous temperature monitoring without opening the oven door and losing heat. Simply insert the probe into your meat, close the oven door with the lead running through the seal gap, and monitor progress on the external display.

Will the 1.2-metre lead be long enough for my setup?

The 1.2m (120cm) lead accommodates most domestic ovens, BBQs, and smokers. Measure from your oven interior to where you'd position the display unit—typically on the oven door or nearby worktop. Most customers find 1.2m provides ample length with slack to spare. If you have an unusually deep oven or need the display positioned far from your cooker, measure your specific requirements before purchasing.

How accurate is the DOT thermometer?

The DOT offers ±1°C accuracy between -20°C and 120°C, which covers all standard cooking temperatures for roasts, poultry, and BBQ meats. This accuracy is suitable for achieving consistent results—knowing whether your beef is at 54°C or 56°C makes a meaningful difference to doneness. For professional-level precision or extreme temperature environments, consider calibrated thermometers like the Meater Pro with ±0.3°C accuracy, but for most home cooking, the DOT's accuracy is entirely adequate.

Can I use this for BBQ smoking at low temperatures?

Yes, the -50 to 300°C range accommodates both low-temperature smoking (typically 100-150°C) and high-heat roasting. The magnetic backing or fold-out stand allows convenient placement on or near your smoker. The 70dB alarm ensures you'll hear it outdoors when your brisket reaches target temperature, and the IP65 water-resistant case protects against outdoor conditions. The wired design means no Bluetooth connectivity issues in outdoor environments.

Why Temperature Monitoring Matters

In our 52 years helping customers select cooking equipment, we've observed that accurate temperature monitoring is perhaps the most underestimated factor in achieving consistent cooking results. Relying on cooking times alone is inherently unreliable—a 2kg chicken from the fridge cooks differently than one at room temperature, ovens vary in actual temperature despite dial settings, and meat thickness affects cooking duration significantly.

The ETI DOT addresses this fundamental challenge through continuous monitoring. By tracking the internal temperature of your food throughout cooking, you eliminate guesswork and respond to what's actually happening rather than following approximate timing guidelines. The leave-in design is particularly valuable because it allows monitoring without opening the oven door—each time you open the door, oven temperature drops substantially, extending cooking time unpredictably.

What makes the DOT particularly suitable for many customers is its deliberate simplicity. No smartphone apps mean no compatibility issues, no software updates, no Bluetooth pairing problems. The wired connection between probe and display guarantees reliable communication—something wireless thermometers occasionally struggle with in RF-noisy kitchen environments or through thick oven doors. For customers who simply want dependable temperature monitoring without technological complexity, the DOT's straightforward approach delivers consistent results.

Care & Use Instructions

Initial setup: Remove packaging and insert two AAA batteries (not included) into the battery compartment. The display will illuminate. Use the arrow buttons to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit if needed. The unit is now ready to use.

Using the thermometer: Insert the probe into the thickest part of your food, avoiding bones and fat which can give inaccurate readings. Use the arrow buttons to set your target temperature—the display shows both current temperature (larger numbers) and target temperature (smaller numbers). Place food in the oven or BBQ, threading the lead through the door seal. The display unit remains outside, attached magnetically to the oven exterior or positioned on the worktop using the fold-out stand. Monitor progress on the backlit display. When the food reaches your target temperature, the 70dB alarm sounds.

Probe care: Allow the probe to cool before cleaning. Wipe with a damp cloth—the probe can be immersed in water for cleaning, but avoid immersing the lead connection point. Never immerse the display unit. The IP65 rating protects the display unit against splashes and spray, but it is not fully waterproof. Dry the probe thoroughly before storage.

Display unit care: Wipe the display unit with a damp cloth as needed. The water-resistant case protects against kitchen splashes, but avoid direct water streams or immersion. Store in a dry location when not in use.

Lead maintenance: The stainless steel braided lead is durable but should be coiled loosely for storage rather than bent sharply, which can damage internal wiring over time. Avoid pinching the lead in oven doors—it should thread through the seal gap naturally without force.

Battery replacement: Replace batteries when the display becomes dim or intermittent. The 5000-hour battery life typically provides 6-12 months of regular use. Always use quality alkaline AAA batteries for best performance.

Storage: Store the thermometer in a dry location. The magnetic backing allows convenient storage on the oven exterior between uses. Ensure the probe is dry before storage to prevent corrosion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I've used it and don't like it?

Return it anyway. Our no quibble guarantee covers used items - if it doesn't do what you wanted, we'll refund you. This applies even after you've cooked with it. We've offered this guarantee since 1972 because we believe customers shouldn't take a risk when purchasing cooking equipment.

How does the Half-Price Replacement guarantee work?

Valid for 2 years from purchase date. If you accidentally damage this thermometer, we'll replace it at half price with proof of purchase and evidence of damage. Photos of the damage are acceptable. This supplements ETI's one-year guarantee, providing extended protection for everyday use where accidents happen.

How long does delivery take?

Standard delivery to mainland UK addresses can take up to 7 working days, but is usually 3-4, and is free for orders over £49. Next day delivery may be available for £9.95 on orders placed before 1pm Monday to Thursday, depending on your location and our stock levels. You can also collect from our shops in Cobham or Reigate, or our warehouse in Redhill.

Does this come with batteries?

No, batteries are not included. The DOT requires two AAA batteries, which are readily available from supermarkets and shops. We recommend quality alkaline batteries rather than cheap alternatives for best performance and longevity. With the 5000-hour battery life, a set of batteries typically lasts 6-12 months with regular use.

Can I buy additional probes for different purposes?

Yes, ETI offers additional probes compatible with the DOT thermometer. Options include oven probes for monitoring ambient air temperature in your oven or BBQ, and mini needle probes for small or delicate foods like fish fillets. Contact us for availability and compatibility guidance for specific probe types.

Will the probe damage if I accidentally leave it in a hot oven?

The probe is designed to withstand temperatures up to 300°C continuously—far exceeding typical roasting temperatures of 180-220°C. However, avoid exposing it to higher temperatures (like self-cleaning oven cycles which can exceed 400°C) or direct flame contact, which can damage the probe. Normal roasting use, even extended sessions, will not harm the probe.

How do I know what temperature to set for different meats?

The DOT displays your chosen target temperature but doesn't include pre-programmed settings. Refer to safe cooking temperature guidelines: beef/lamb (rare 52°C, medium 60°C, well-done 70°C), pork (70°C), chicken (75°C), turkey (75°C). These are internal temperatures measured at the thickest part. Food safety authorities recommend minimum temperatures, but personal preference varies—research your preferred doneness levels and set accordingly.

Is this suitable for checking fridge and freezer temperatures?

Yes, the -50 to 300°C range accommodates fridge (0-4°C) and freezer (-18°C or below) temperature monitoring. However, the DOT is designed as a leave-in cooking thermometer rather than an ambient temperature monitor. For dedicated fridge/freezer monitoring, consider thermometers specifically designed for continuous ambient temperature tracking rather than using the DOT's penetration probe.

What does IP65 protection mean practically?

IP65 rating means the display unit is protected against dust ingress and water jets from any direction. Practically, this means kitchen splashes, spray, and outdoor use in light rain won't damage the unit. However, it's not waterproof—don't immerse it in water or expose it to heavy rain. The rating makes it suitable for outdoor BBQ use where weather conditions may be imperfect, and protects against typical kitchen moisture.

Can people hear the alarm in a busy kitchen?

The 70dB alarm is deliberately loud—comparable to normal conversation volume or background music. In a busy professional kitchen with multiple activities and ambient noise, it's audible but not overwhelming. If you work in extremely noisy environments, you may need to stay relatively near the display unit. For most domestic and professional kitchen settings, the 70dB volume is sufficient to alert you when food reaches temperature.
