What Customers Ask About Le Creuset Side Plate 22cm
What's the difference between a side plate and a dinner plate?
Side plates (typically 20-23cm) are smaller than dinner plates (typically 26-28cm) and serve different purposes. Use side plates for starters, side salads, desserts, bread and butter, cheese and biscuits, or smaller lunch portions. Use dinner plates for main courses. Many complete table settings include both sizes—dinner plates for mains, side plates for everything else. The 22cm size makes this Le Creuset plate versatile for multiple courses throughout a meal.
How does the recessed base help with serving?
The recessed base creates a subtle well that helps contain salad dressings, dessert sauces, butter, or any liquids. This means you can serve dressed salads, saucy desserts, or buttered bread without liquids running to the plate edges. The design gives you freedom to plate generously without worry about mess, particularly useful when serving guests. The recess is subtle enough that the plate maintains classic appearance whilst offering practical benefits.
Can I use this plate for hot desserts?
Yes, the plate is oven-safe up to 260°C, making it suitable for individual desserts like fruit crumbles, bread puddings, or baked cheesecakes. If the plate is at room temperature, place it in a cold oven and heat gradually together—don't preheat above 205°C. The stoneware's heat retention keeps desserts warm through service. The 22cm size suits individual or sharing dessert portions perfectly.

Care & Use Instructions
Before first use: Remove all labels and packaging. Wash in warm, soapy water, then rinse and dry thoroughly.
Pre-warming plates: To serve warm starters or side dishes at optimal temperature, pre-warm plates in a low oven (70-90°C) for 10-15 minutes before plating. The specialist stoneware retains heat well, keeping food warm throughout the course. Use oven gloves when handling warmed plates.
Using for cold dishes: For cold starters, salads, or chilled desserts, refrigerate plates beforehand. The stoneware keeps cold dishes pleasantly cool throughout serving, particularly useful for summer dining or refreshing starters.
Oven use for desserts: When baking individual desserts, if the plate is at room temperature, place it in a cold oven and heat gradually together—don't preheat above 205°C. For frozen desserts, place the frozen plate in a cold oven and allow both to heat together. Never place frozen stoneware into a preheated oven. When using under the grill for browning, maintain at least 6.5cm between the heat source and the plate top.
Daily cleaning: Allow plates to cool completely before washing. Wipe away food residue. For dried dressings or sauces, soak briefly in warm, soapy water to soften before washing. Hand wash and dry, or place in the dishwasher securely. The scratch-resistant glaze releases most food easily without aggressive scrubbing.
Removing stubborn stains: Foods with strong colours (salad dressings, berry desserts, tomato-based dishes) may cause slight staining if left for extended periods. Create a paste of baking soda and water, apply to stained areas, let sit briefly, then scrub gently with a soft brush or sponge. Rinse thoroughly. Prompt cleaning after meals prevents most staining.
Removing cutlery marks: If metal utensils leave grey marks on the plate surface, these are typically metal deposits rather than scratches. Remove them by rubbing gently with a paste of baking soda and water, then rinse. The scratch-resistant glaze itself remains undamaged—the marks are surface deposits that clean away.
Storage: Store plates clean and dry. Stack carefully with the largest plates at the bottom. If stacking many plates, ensure your cupboard shelf can support the weight—stoneware is heavier than standard ceramic. Consider placing paper towels or soft cloths between plates during long-term storage to prevent any potential marking, though the scratch-resistant glaze is quite robust.
Avoid: Never plunge hot plates into cold water—this creates thermal shock that may cause cracking. When adding liquid to a hot plate in the oven, remove it first and allow to cool for a few minutes. Don't use on hob or stovetop—this stoneware is designed for oven and table use.
