Demeyere Buying Guide
Demeyere Cookware Buying Guide
About Demeyere
Demeyere is a premium Belgian cookware manufacturer established in 1908 and headquartered in Herentals near Antwerp, Belgium. The family-owned company has spent over 115 years developing high-performance stainless steel and aluminium cookware used by professional chefs and home cooks across Europe, America, Asia, and Africa.
Historical Context
Emmanuel Demeyere founded the company in 1908, initially focusing on metal housewares. The company's first printed catalogue appeared in 1931, featuring kettles, coffee sets, tea sets, plant pots, and smoker sets. During World War II, Demeyere contributed to relief efforts by manufacturing soup pots for the starving population.
In 1946, leveraging the trend towards centralised kitchens, Maurice and Emmanuel Demeyere introduced their line of stainless steel cookware, known for hygiene and durability. Demeyere became induction pioneers in the 1970s, developing technologies that remain industry-leading today.
Brand Philosophy: Performance Through Innovation
Demeyere develops cookware with technologies adapted to specific cooking methods rather than using a single construction approach across all products. This results in different base technologies optimised for straight-sided versus conical cookware—a level of engineering specificity uncommon in the cookware industry.
Core Innovation: Demeyere is the only cookware manufacturer in the world offering 7-ply construction, whilst most competitors use 3-ply, with some offering 4-ply or 5-ply.

Value Proposition Analysis
Is Demeyere Worth the Investment?
Demeyere cookware represents a long-term investment. Understanding the value requires looking beyond initial cost to lifetime performance.
Longevity Factors
- Construction Permanence: Multi-ply bases bonded during manufacturing cannot delaminate
- Damage Resistance: Stainless steel resists warping, denting, and scratching
- Technology Integration: TriplInduc®, Silvinox®, and copper cores built into construction, not applied coatings
- Lifetime Use: With proper care, 30+ years of regular use expected
- No Consumable Components: Unlike non-stick requiring replacement every 3-5 years
Cost-Per-Use Calculation
Consider a Demeyere Atlantis saucepan at £299.99:
- 30-year lifespan: £10.00 per year
- Used 3x weekly: £0.06 per use over 30 years
- Compare to: Budget saucepan at £50 replaced every 5 years = £300 over 30 years with inferior performance throughout
Performance Value
- Energy Savings: 30% induction efficiency improvement provides measurable utility cost reductions
- Food Quality: Superior heat distribution prevents burning, reduces cooking failures
- Cooking Speed: Faster heating reduces active cooking time
- Versatility: Professional-grade equipment expands technique possibilities

Cleaning Stainless Steel Demeyere Cookware
Dishwasher Use
All Demeyere stainless steel cookware is dishwasher safe. The Silvinox® treatment particularly enhances dishwasher durability, maintaining appearance even with regular machine washing.
Hand Washing Method
Routine Cleaning:
- Wash with warm water and standard dish soap
- Abrasive Scourers Safe: Can use steel wool or scrubbing pads without damaging stainless steel
- Recommended: Lady Jane Scourer with Demeyere Cream Cleaner for Stainless Steel (0.75L)
- Barkeeper's Friend (oxalic acid cleanser) for stubborn stains
Removing Stubborn Burnt-On Food
- Fill pan with water and bring to boil
- Turn off heat and add 2-3 tablespoons baking soda
- Let sit for several hours or overnight
- Most burnt residue will release easily
- For remaining marks, use Barkeeper's Friend or Demeyere Cream Cleaner with non-abrasive scrubber
- If necessary, stainless steel can tolerate steel wool without damage
Heat Discolouration (Rainbow Effect)
High-heat cooking can create rainbow/blue discolouration on stainless steel. This is cosmetic only and does not affect performance or safety.
Removal Method: Use Barkeeper's Friend or Demeyere Cream Cleaner with non-abrasive sponge. Silvinox® finish makes removal easier than untreated stainless steel.
Storage
- Stack with pan protectors to prevent scratching (though stainless steel is scratch-resistant)
- Store lids separately or slightly ajar to allow air circulation
- No special storage requirements needed
- Handles are durable enough for hanging storage if desired
Cooking with Uncoated Stainless Steel
Many customers purchase Demeyere specifically for uncoated stainless steel performance. Proper technique prevents sticking without non-stick coatings.
Key Technique Principles:
- Proper Preheating: Heat pan over medium heat for 2-3 minutes. Test with water droplet test (Leidenfrost effect - water should form rolling balls)
- Fat/Oil Usage: Add adequate fat once pan is heated. Fat should shimmer but not smoke
- Temperature Management: Use medium heat for most cooking. Stainless steel's excellent heat retention means less heat input required
- Natural Release: Allow food (especially proteins) to release naturally. Food will stick initially then release when proper crust forms. Don't force or flip prematurely
- Deglazing: Use wine, stock, or water to deglaze and create pan sauces, lifting any stuck fond which adds flavour

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use metal utensils with Demeyere stainless steel cookware?
Yes. Stainless steel surfaces withstand metal utensils, spatulas, whisks, and tongs without damage. The Silvinox® treatment makes surfaces particularly scratch-resistant. However, avoid metal utensils on non-stick coated Alu Pro pans as this can damage the non-stick surface.
What is the maximum oven temperature for Demeyere cookware?
Stainless steel cookware with stainless steel handles and lids (Atlantis, Industry, Apollo) is typically oven-safe to 500°C, limited only by your oven's maximum temperature. Models with non-stick coatings may have lower limits, typically 260°C. Check specific product documentation or contact Art of Living for clarification.
Will Demeyere work on my induction hob?
Yes. All Demeyere stainless steel ranges (Atlantis, Industry, Apollo) work on induction and feature TriplInduc® technology providing up to 30% better efficiency than standard induction-compatible cookware. Alu Pro models with specialised induction base also work on induction. Demeyere pioneered induction cookware technology in the 1970s.
Why do some Demeyere pans have copper cores and others aluminium cores?
Demeyere optimises base construction for specific applications. Straight-sided pans (saucepans, stockpots, casseroles) in Atlantis use copper cores for maximum temperature control crucial for liquid-based cooking and sauce-making. Conical shapes (frying pans, sauciers) use aluminium cores extended throughout the body for even surface heating critical for consistent browning.
What's the difference between InductoSeal® and InductoBase®?
Both are 7-ply construction. InductoSeal® features hermetically sealed copper core, used in straight-sided Atlantis cookware (saucepans, casseroles, stockpots). InductoBase® features aluminium core, used in conical Atlantis and all Apollo cookware. In conical items, InductoBase® extends 7-ply throughout the entire body from base to rim.
Can I buy individual Demeyere pieces?
Yes. Demeyere products are available as individual pieces at Art of Living, allowing you to build a customised collection based on actual cooking needs rather than purchasing unused items in a set. This lets you invest in specific pieces you'll use regularly, mixing ranges based on application.
What warranty does Demeyere offer?
Demeyere offers a 30-year warranty on manufacturing defects. This covers delamination (layer separation), handle attachment failures, and manufacturing flaws. Art of Living offers additional Half-Price Accidental Damage Replacement guarantee for 2 years from purchase, covering breakage not included in the manufacturer warranty.
How do I remove stubborn stains from Demeyere cookware?
Fill pan with water, bring to boil, turn off heat, add 2-3 tablespoons baking soda. Let sit overnight - most burnt residue will release. For remaining marks, use Barkeeper's Friend or Demeyere Cream Cleaner with scrubber. Stainless steel can tolerate steel wool. For heat discolouration (rainbow effect), use Barkeeper's Friend - this is cosmetic only and doesn't affect performance.
Are Demeyere Seconds really the same quality?
Yes. Demeyere Seconds feature identical construction, materials, technologies (7-ply or 5-ply, TriplInduc®, Silvinox®), and performance as first-quality items. Only differences are minor cosmetic blemishes such as small scratches on exterior surfaces or minor manufacturing marks that don't affect cooking performance. Same 30-year warranty. Provides entry point at 20-40% reduced pricing.
What if I've used my Demeyere cookware and don't like it?
Return it anyway. Our No Quibble Returns guarantee covers used items - if it doesn't perform as expected or doesn't suit your cooking style, we'll refund you. This applies even after cooking with it multiple times. We've offered this guarantee since 1972 because customers shouldn't take a risk when purchasing premium cookware.
How does the Half-Price Replacement guarantee work?
Valid for 2 years from purchase. If you accidentally break or damage your Demeyere cookware (dropped, warped through improper heating, handle damage), we'll replace it at half the current retail price with proof of purchase and evidence of damage. Photos acceptable as proof. This guarantee covers accidental damage not included in Demeyere's 30-year manufacturer warranty.
How long does delivery take?
Standard delivery to mainland UK can take up to 7 working days, usually 3-4, free for orders over £49. Next day delivery may be available for £9.95 on orders placed before 1pm Monday to Thursday, depending on your location and our stock levels. You can also collect from our shops in Cobham or Reigate, or our warehouse in Redhill.
Should I choose Atlantis or Industry for my first purchase?
Choose Atlantis if you frequently make sauces requiring precise temperature control, if budget is not a constraint, or if you want absolute maximum performance. Choose Industry if you prioritise high-heat cooking (searing, frying), want excellent performance at better value, or prefer robust American-style construction. Both deliver professional results - your cooking style should guide the decision more than quality concerns.
Purchase Considerations
Before Purchasing Demeyere Cookware
Measure Your Hob
Demeyere pans are engineered for efficient heat distribution. Match pan base diameter to burner size for optimal performance:

- 24-26cm pans: large burners, family cooking
- 28-32cm pans: largest burners
Strategic Collection Building
- Start with high-use items: Most cooks use a 24-26cm frying pan and 20cm saucepan most frequently
- Experience first: Purchase one piece to experience Demeyere performance before expanding
- Mix ranges intelligently: Combine Apollo for everyday items with Atlantis speciality pieces
- Consider Seconds: Begin with cosmetically blemished pieces at 20-40% savings to access Demeyere quality at lower entry cost

Hi Penny
Demeyere frying pans are made in Belgium, and have been since the company was founded in 1908.
Le Creuset is a little more complicated!
Cast iron frying pans are made in Fresnoy-le-Grand, France at the company’s original foundry.
Signature Stainless Steel frying pans are made in Europe and are primarily manufactured in Portugal.
3 Ply and Toughened Non Stick (TNS) pans are made in China.
Hope that helps.
Andi
Which countries are Deymere and Le Crueset frying pans manufactured in, please?
