Sage's parent company Breville Group reduced its Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by approximately 25% between 2021 and 2023, and has targeted net zero for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by the end of FY25. The company began reporting Scope 3 emissions for the first time in 2023, reflecting improving transparency.

At a product level, Sage appliances such as the Barista Express and Oracle ranges are designed for precision and efficiency, with system-guided workflows that reduce waste of coffee, water, and energy during use.

Sage is the European trade name for Breville Group, an Australian company headquartered in Sydney where products are designed and developed. The majority of manufacturing takes place in China, with some higher-end and specialist products produced in Australia.

Breville Group maintains an ethical sourcing policy requiring all vendors to comply with applicable environmental laws and obtain required environmental permits. The company is working towards carbon neutrality across all operations by 2030.

Breville Group does not currently publish specific recycled material content data for Sage appliances. The company complies with the WEEE Directive for end-of-life electrical equipment recycling, and Sage products carry WEEE symbols indicating they should be recycled through appropriate collection schemes rather than general waste.

Sage supports product longevity by making genuine spare parts, cleaning accessories, and replacement components available directly, reducing the need for full appliance replacement when individual parts fail.

Sage appliances sold in the UK carry CE and UKCA marking, confirming compliance with applicable UK and EU safety, health, and environmental regulations. Products meet EU energy efficiency and ecodesign requirements under the Energy-related Products Directive.

Breville Group's vendor code of conduct requires supply chain partners to comply with all relevant environmental protection laws and international environmental standards, and to safely manage hazardous materials throughout their lifecycle.

Sage has established a strong reputation for precision engineering in consumer kitchen appliances, particularly espresso machines. Technologies such as the Impress Puck System, dose control grinding, and ThermoJet heating deliver professional-level performance through engineering designed to reduce user error and resource waste.

The brand's innovation programme consistently introduces genuinely new functionality to the category rather than incremental updates, with each generation of products demonstrating measurable improvements in temperature stability, grind consistency, and ease of use.

    Brand History

1932 Breville founded in Sydney by Bill O'Brien & Harry Norville
1974 Toasted sandwich maker launched — 400,000 sold in year one
2013 Sage launched in the UK with Heston Blumenthal; 16 products at launch
2020 Baratza acquired, strengthening coffee grinder expertise
2022 LELIT acquired, adding Italian espresso machine craftsmanship
2024 Oracle Jet launched; now available in 80+ countries

Breville was founded on 11 January 1932 in Sydney, Australia, by Bill O'Brien and Harry Norville, who combined parts of their surnames to create the brand name. The company began as a radio manufacturer before pivoting to household appliances in the 1950s.

John O'Brien established a dedicated Research and Development centre in the 1960s that would drive product innovation for decades. In the UK and Europe, the brand trades as Sage — created in 2013 when Breville Group discovered an unrelated British company already held the Breville name.

Sage was launched in the UK in collaboration with Michelin-starred chef Heston Blumenthal, who helped develop and champion the range to UK retailers. The initial 16 products have grown to cover espresso machines, ovens, juicers, blenders, and more.

The brand's identity is built around bringing professional-grade kitchen technology to the home, with a focus on precision, craftsmanship, and the belief that understanding food is the foundation of designing great appliances.

Sage has built a particular reputation for premium espresso machines. Models such as the Barista Express, Dual Boiler, and Oracle introduced features previously found only in commercial equipment — including PID temperature control, dose control grinding, and automated tamping.

In 2020 Breville Group acquired Baratza, a specialist coffee grinder company, and in 2022 acquired LELIT, an Italian manufacturer of high-end espresso machines, deepening the group's technical expertise across the full coffee-making process.

    Sage appliances

Breville Group now operates in over 80 countries under the Breville and Sage brand names, posting revenues of A$1.53 billion in FY24. The group has received over 40 international design awards and holds over 100 active patents.

The Oracle Jet, launched in July 2024, and the Oracle Dual Boiler, launched in July 2025, represent the current pinnacle of Sage's range — continuing a tradition of bringing professional-grade technology to the home kitchen.

I've had my Sage Bambino Plus for ten years — a gift from my mother when I left university, once I'd moved somewhere I could actually trust it wouldn't disappear. A decade on and it still produces a better espresso than most coffee shops. That kind of longevity isn't something you take for granted, and it's a big part of why I'm so comfortable recommending Sage to customers.

What keeps surprising me is how the range holds up across completely different product categories. We tested the BBQ Press & Grill in the shop and I was genuinely gutted to give it back — I hadn't expected to become attached to a grill, but the halloumi paninis it produced were the best I've ever had. And the Combi Wave 3-in-1 in the office still amazes me: it softens butter without melting it, which sounds like a small thing until you've spent years waiting for butter to come to room temperature.

My Bambino is coming up to 10 years old and has still yet to disappoint. It's a great starter espresso machine and the milk texture it produces is better than most coffee shops.

Favourite Recipe Earl Grey Matcha Latte

Matcha is expensive, so when I do have some in my kitchen, this is my favourite way to drink it. Enjoy it hot or cold.
