The Bloody Mary is the ultimate brunch cocktail and the world's favourite savoury drink. It delivers a balance of sweet, salt, sour and umami flavours that is unlike any other.

Ingredients

  • large handful of ice
  • 100ml vodka
  • 500ml tomato juice
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice, plus 2 slices to serve
  • few shakes Worcestershire sauce
  • few shakes Tabasco
  • pinch celery salt
  • pinch black pepper
  • 2 celery sticks, to serve

Bloody Mary rim salt

  • salt
  • paprika (I like smoked paprika)
  • garlic powder
  • onion powder

Method

  1. Place the ice in a large jug.
  2. Measure the vodka, tomato juice and lemon juice and pour it straight onto the ice.
  3. Add 3 shakes of Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco (or more if you like it very spicy) and a pinch of celery salt and pepper.
  4. Stir gently until the outside of the jug feels cold, then strain the cocktail into 2 tall glasses, rimmed with Bloody Mary rim salt.
  5. Top up with fresh ice, add a celery stick and lemon slice to both glasses and enjoy.

Bloody Mary rim salt

  1. Add a teaspoon of each ingredient to a small bowl or jar.
  2. Give it a mix or a shake!
  3. Simple.

How to rim your glass

  1. To rim a glass, rub the cut edge of a lemon wedge around the edge of the glass. The fresh lemon juice imparts some tart flavour and its sticky juice will help the salt and spices to stick.
  2. Water will not have the same effect and will make your salt rim dissolve more quickly.
  3. Pour some of the Bloody Mary rim salt mixture onto a small plate.
  4. Place the glass upside down onto the plate and twist gently to coat the rim.

Cook's notes

If you have any salt leftover, it's great as a rub for chicken, salmon or pork.
